Expect wear at the articulation hitch and center pivot bushings and pins from steering load, and at blade lift, tilt, and pitch cylinder seals and pins from dozing loads. Front and rear axle planetary hub seals weep with age, and wheel bearings need inspection. The S6D170-1G runs a mechanical governor and injection pump instead of an ECM, so throttle response complaints usually trace to governor linkage wear or pump calibration, not software. Analog gauge sender failures and buzzer circuit faults are the most common electrical complaints on this pre-ECM harness.

Major overhaul work centers on the mechanical fuel system: reset valve clearance to 0.4 mm intake / 1.0 mm exhaust cold, then calibrate the injection pump and rebuild injector nozzles, since this naturally aspirated engine leans on precise mechanical tuning rather than software trim to hold power and idle specs. Rebuild transmission clutch packs and the torque converter at high hours, along with axle planetary gearsets and differentials. Blade cutting edges, end bits, and articulation joint bushings and pins need oversize rebuild by the time the engine reaches overhaul.

For cold-weather starts, use coolant/block heating, switch to the correct low-temperature engine and hydraulic oil viscosity grades, and add fuel anti-gel treatment, since this platform has no factory-heated fuel system beyond the water separator. In hot, dusty quarry or landfill environments, shorten air cleaner and radiator core cleaning cycles, monitor corrosion resistor cartridge life faster in hard water, and increase grease frequency at the articulation hitch and blade linkage where abrasive fines accelerate pin and bushing wear.
