The VHS-10 draws hydraulic power from its carrier excavator, so predictive care centers on that shared circuit rather than an onboard engine. Sample the carrier's auxiliary hydraulic oil regularly and watch for metal fines that signal cylinder or pivot bushing wear. Log blade-edge wear and pivot-pin clearance at each interval to project remaining service life before the jaw loses cutting force. A cylinder drift test catches seal degradation early, before it shows up as slow jaw closure or lost demolition force.

Most VHS-10 repairs trace back to the jaw and pivot, the two components carrying every shear cycle. Chipped or rolled blade edges get reground or replaced in pairs to keep jaw geometry square. Worn pivot pins and bushings cause visible play and uneven jaw closure; replace both together rather than one alone. Leaking cylinder seals show up as slow or incomplete jaw closing under load. Cracked mounting-bracket ears or elongated pin bores are common on units cycled hard in scrap processing and need weld repair or bracket replacement.

A full VHS-10 overhaul centers on the pivot structure and cylinder, since the tool has no powertrain to rebuild. Rebuild replaces the cylinder's seals, wear rings, and rod bushing as a set, then checks rod straightness. Pivot bores get bushed or line-bored back to spec once wear exceeds OMM limits, with new pins fitted throughout. Blades are reground to original profile or replaced outright. Crack-check the housing and mounting bracket with dye penetrant before returning the shear to service, since fatigue cracks concentrate at the pivot ears and bracket welds.

Demolition and scrap sites expose the VHS-10 to abrasive dust and debris that packs into the pivot joints and blade root, so clean and regrease those points more often in dry, dusty conditions. In cold climates, warm the carrier's hydraulic oil before cycling the jaw hard, since a passive attachment has no engine heat of its own to bring the circuit up to temperature. After wet or corrosive work, wash accumulated grit from pivot pins and cylinder rod, then inspect seals for grit ingress before storage.
