Because the 3054C runs mechanical rack-type injection with no ECM to flag faults, fluid sampling is the PS-300C's main early-warning tool. Pull S·O·S engine oil samples on schedule to catch turbocharger or ring wear before it shows up as smoke. Sample powershift transmission oil regularly; the constant forward-reverse cycling of paving passes loads the clutch packs harder than typical earthmoving duty, so metal content in the sample flags clutch wear early. Track coolant condition too, since the mechanical engine has no electronic overheat protection beyond gauges.

Common PS-300C repairs center on the water-spray tire-wetting system: clogged nozzles let hot asphalt stick to the tires and tear the tread, so nozzle and strainer cleaning is a frequent shop job. The oscillating tire axles take steady wear at the pivot pins from the staggered-tire kneading action; loose pins show up as uneven rolling patterns. On the driveline, powershift clutch packs and the mechanical injection pump's rack linkage need periodic adjustment, since neither self-corrects the way an electronically governed engine would.

Major PS-300C overhaul work falls on the powershift transmission clutch packs, the turbocharger, and the oscillating axle pivots and wheel bearings, all of which see cumulative wear from paving's constant direction changes and tire loading. The 3054C's injection pump is a rebuild candidate once mechanical wear pushes timing and fuel delivery out of tolerance. Because the PS-300C shares its chassis and driveline with the PF-300C, rebuild parts and procedures for the transmission and axle carry across both badges.

Cold-weather starts on the mechanically injected 3054C rely on properly working glow plugs or ether-assist, since there is no ECM-managed cold-start strategy to compensate. Drain and winterize the water-spray tank and lines before freezing weather to prevent cracked fittings and a burst tank. In hot paving-season use, check tire pressure more often, since heat from fresh asphalt raises pressure faster than normal, and flush the water-spray system periodically to clear mineral scale and algae that build up in tanks left standing between jobs.
