Cat's published standard oil-change interval for the current G3606 A4 rating is 5,000 hours, unusually long for a gas engine, made workable only by running S.O.S oil sampling every 250 hours (Caterpillar's baseline rate for gas engines), which tracks oxidation, nitration, and TBN rather than soot. Run Cat NGEC coolant, never Extended Life Coolant; ELC isn't formulated for Cat gas engines. Track SCA concentration, pull Level 1/2 coolant samples on schedule, and watch detonation sensor and exhaust port temperature trends on the control panel for early combustion problems.

On a G3606, the recurring corrective work centers on the ignition and lean-burn combustion path, not a chassis: precombustion chamber and spark plug erosion from lean-burn firing is the most common complaint, followed by ignition coil and detonation-sensor wiring chafing near the rocker covers. Turbocharger wastegate actuators stick from carbon buildup, and gas admission valve or choke linkage drift causes cylinder-to-cylinder air/fuel imbalance. Skid-mounted cooling package and coupling guard leaks show up on older units. Reman power heads and exchange turbochargers are the standard fix, not a full block swap.

Top-end overhaul kits for the G3606 are staged at roughly 25,000, 50,000, 75,000, and 100,000-hour milestones, covering cylinder heads, pistons, liners, rod and main bearings, precombustion chambers, and turbocharger cartridges. Where a major overhaul lands inside that range depends heavily on fuel: clean pipeline or wellhead natural gas at lower compression ratios can push toward the 75,000-100,000-hour end, while corrosive biogas or landfill gas pulls the interval down closer to 50,000 hours. Exchange power heads and pre-chambers are the normal route back into service rather than scrapping a worn block.

Cold-site G3606 packages need the jacket-water heater and prelube system verified before every start; the control will not crank the engine until prelube pressure reads okay, and low ambient temperature makes that check critical. Check coolant SCA and glycol concentration ahead of winter. In hot or humid sites, verify enclosure and control-panel ventilation/cooling, and drain the fuel gas scrubber moisture traps more often. Sour or wet gas fields call for tighter oil and coolant sampling for H2S and acid contamination, plus closer inspection of skid hardware and exhaust silencer corrosion.
