Caterpillar D8R II

Maintenance schedule, common problems & OEM parts breakdown

The Caterpillar D8R Series II (D8R II) is a large crawler dozer in Cat's D8 size class, built from 2000 to 2004 as the second-generation update of the D8R track-type tractor. It runs a Cat 3406E TA turbocharged-aftercooled inline-six, rated at roughly 231 kW (310 hp) net and 252 kW (338 hp) gross at 2000 rpm, driving a 3-speed powershift transmission through an elevated-sprocket undercarriage. Operating weight runs around 37,600 kg (82,960 lb) in standard trim, with published figures ranging from about 29,600 kg (65,200 lb) stripped to roughly 37,900 kg (83,500 lb) fully equipped, depending on blade, ripper, and track-gauge fitment. The D8R II replaced the original D8R (1996-2000, built around the earlier 3406C DITA engine) and was itself replaced by the D8T ACERT in 2004. Caterpillar offered it in standard and WH (waste-handling) configurations, with universal (U) or semi-universal (SU) blades and single- or multi-shank ripper options.

The Series II update kept the D8R's basic architecture, including the elevated-sprocket final drives, oscillating equalizer-bar roller frames, and powershift driveline, but swapped in the more powerful, electronically governed 3406E in place of the mechanically injected 3406C, along with cab and hydraulic refinements. That places the D8R II between two eras. It has more power and electronic engine management than the original D8R, but none of the ACERT emissions hardware that complicates the D8T and later machines. That balance keeps used D8R IIs in demand for quarry, mining, land-clearing, and waste-handling fleets. Factory parts support has thinned as Caterpillar's current focus shifts to Next-Generation D8 models, so the used and aftermarket undercarriage, ground-engaging-tool, and powertrain parts market now carries a growing share of support for this platform.

Performance

TransmissionPlanetary powershift with single-stage torque converter/torque divider (about 70 percent of engine torque through the converter, 30 percent through a direct drive shaft) and planetary differential steering; 3 speeds forward, 3 speeds reverse. Electronic Clutch Pressure Control modulates individual clutches for smoother shifts and supports auto-shift/auto-kickdown.
Forward travel speeds1st 3.4 km/h (2.1 mph); 2nd 6.0 km/h (3.7 mph); 3rd 10.6 km/h (6.6 mph)
Reverse travel speeds1st 4.5 km/h (2.8 mph); 2nd 7.9 km/h (4.9 mph); 3rd 13.8 km/h (8.6 mph)
Drawbar pullPublished as a speed-vs-pull curve rather than one peak number. First gear gives the highest pull, on a chart scaled to a 80 000 kg (176 000 lb) maximum, tapering off as ground speed climbs through the three forward gears. No single maximum drawbar-pull figure is issued for this model - consult the factory pull-vs-speed curve for a specific gear/load point.
Ground pressure, standard shoe0.92 kg/cm2 (about 13.1 psi) Standard suspended undercarriage; 0.87 kg/cm2 (about 12.4 psi) Non-Suspended; 0.54 kg/cm2 (about 7.7 psi) LGP with 965 mm shoes
Ground contact area, standard shoe3.58 m2 (38.5 sq ft) Standard suspended; 3.63 m2 (39.1 sq ft) Non-Suspended; 6.3 m2 (67.8 sq ft) LGP
GradeabilityNot published as a separate percentage on the factory spec sheet for this model; slope capability follows from the drawbar-pull curve and undercarriage/grouser design above
SteeringCaterpillar differential steer using three planetary gear sets, a dedicated hydraulic steering pump and a bi-directional steering motor; delivers uninterrupted power to both tracks through a turn, single tiller lever controls direction, gear selection and steering
Final drivesElevated, four-planet double-reduction planetary final drives isolated from ground and work-tool impact loads

D8R II fluids & capacities

SystemCapacityRecommended fluid
Engine crankcase (with filter)37 L (9.8 US gal / 39.1 qt)D8R Series II uses the Cat 3406E turbocharged-aftercooled diesel (non-ACERT, pre-aftertreatment generation, net 231 kW / 310 hp). Factory-recommended oil is Cat DEO (Diesel Engine Oil), SAE 15W-40 for normal ambient temperatures, SAE 10W-30 in cold climates; meets the API CG-4/CH-4 diesel engine oil category current for this engine generation.
Cooling systemapprox. 94 L (24.8 US gal); one spec sheet lists 93.7 L (99 qt) for the same machine - treat as approx. 94 LCat coolant/antifreeze, 50/50 premix with water. This production era (early-to-mid 2000s) was factory-filled with either Cat ELC (Extended Life Coolant, long-service interval) or the older Cat DEAC conventional coolant depending on build date. Confirm which type is already in the machine before topping off - ELC and DEAC should not be mixed.
Fuel tank625 L (165 US gal); also reported as 624.5 L (165 gal)No. 2-D diesel fuel, per the low-sulfur diesel spec current for this machine's production era (pre-ultra-low-sulfur mandate).
Power train - powershift transmission + bevel gear/steering clutch compartment (combined, per OMM refill chart)155 L (41 US gal)3-speed powershift transmission with differential steering. The refill capacity chart lists the transmission and the bevel gear/steering clutch compartment as one shared power train system rather than separate fills. Recommended fluid is Cat TDTO (Transmission/Drive Train Oil) meeting the Cat TO-4 spec - SAE 10W for cold starts/low ambient, SAE 30 for normal-to-warm ambient (roughly 0 to 35 C / 32 to 95 F). A TDTO multigrade product extends usable range further into cold climates.
Final drives (each side)12.5 L (3.3 US gal) per sideSame Cat TDTO TO-4 gear oil as the power train, viscosity graded by ambient temperature the same way.
Hydraulic system - implement/steering tank72 L (19 US gal); also reported as 71.9 L (19 gal)Implement and steering pumps are load-sensing and piggyback off the power train drive on this machine, and the tank runs the same Cat TDTO TO-4 oil used in the power train, graded by ambient temperature the same way. Verify oil type before topping off, since some other Cat dozer generations use a dedicated Cat HYDO fill for this circuit instead.
Pivot shaft compartment40 L (10.6 US gal)Cat TDTO TO-4 gear oil, typically SAE 30 grade, same family of fluid as the other power train compartments.
Grease (chassis/pin/bushing fittings)n/a - grease-gun application at scheduled intervals, not a fill volumeCat Multipurpose Grease (MPGM), NLGI 2, lithium-complex EP grease rated for roughly -30 to +40 C (-22 to 104 F) ambient. In colder climates a lighter NLGI 1 or 0 multipurpose grease keeps flowing through fittings at start-up.

Capacities are refill values from factory literature — always fill to the dipstick/sight gauge, not the number.

Servicing the D8R II beyond the schedule

Predictive Maintenance & Fluid Analysis

Run S·O·S oil analysis on the 3406E TA engine, the transmission/torque-divider, final drives, and hydraulic tank at every scheduled interval to catch bearing or seal wear before it reaches the elevated-sprocket final drive housings. Track coolant condition with periodic level-1 and level-2 samples rather than relying on visual checks alone. Log undercarriage wear (link, bushing, sprocket) against factory gauges every few hundred hours. On a machine this age, trending wear data catches a failing final drive seal or a stretching track chain long before it becomes a shutdown.

Corrective & Common Repairs

Expect turbocharger, injector, and fuel-system wear on the high-hour 3406E TA. Boost leaks and injector drift are common causes of power loss or hard starting. Steering clutch and brake pack wear shows up as clutch slip or drift under load. Inspect and reline before it strands the machine mid-cut. Track and roller-frame wear is constant on an elevated-sprocket undercarriage working abrasive ground. Budget for chain, roller, and idler replacement well before catastrophic failure. Blade lift/tilt and ripper cylinder seals are routine leak points on high-hour units.

Overhaul & Rebuild Points

High-hour D8R IIs commonly need an engine inframe overhaul addressing cylinder liners, pistons, and turbocharger components once oil consumption or blow-by climbs. Torque-divider and transmission clutch packs wear with heavy powershift-transmission duty cycles and are a common mid-life rebuild point. The elevated-sprocket final drives and steering clutch/brake compartments should be opened for inspection at major overhaul intervals, since seal and gear wear there is gradual but expensive if ignored. Full undercarriage replacement, including track chains, rollers, sprockets, and idlers, is near-universal by the time a unit reaches heavy rebuild age.

Seasonal & Environment Servicing

Cold climates demand block heaters, correct coolant concentration, and fresh cold-weather-rated engine oil in the 3406E TA before start-up. Verify glow or ether starting aids are functional each fall. In hot, dusty quarry or waste-handling duty, clean the radiator core and air filters more often than the standard interval to prevent overheating and accelerated engine wear. Wet or clay-heavy ground packs the elevated-sprocket undercarriage and track rollers. Clear packed material regularly to avoid accelerated bushing and pin wear. Adjust track tension as ground conditions shift between soft and firm underfoot.

Codes and remedies are general guidance for this model family — always confirm with diagnostic tooling and your dealer before major repairs.

D8R II attachments & work tools

Blades

D8R II takes a Semi-Universal (SU) or Universal (U) dozer blade. SU favors penetration in tight, packed material; U trades some penetration for extra capacity and less spillage on long pushes. Factory SU blade runs about 3940 mm (13 ft) wide, 1690 mm (66.6 in) high, roughly 8.8 m3 (11.4 yd3) capacity and 580 mm (23 in) cutting depth; treat as typical rather than fixed for every serial range, since published U-blade width/capacity varies by source. The parts book also lists SU/U blade-and-edge groups built for landfill duty and a Universal blade with an optional rock guard. VPAT tilt blades, offered on the smaller D6/D7 range, are not part of the D8R II lineup.

Rippers

Rear ripper options are a single-shank or a multi-shank parallelogram ripper, each using twin lift and twin tilt cylinders per the machine's own parts data. Reported ripper weights vary by source and by whether hydraulic control valving is included in the figure: roughly 4.1-4.5 t for the single-shank frame and 4.1-5.3 t for the multi-shank frame. Treat exact weights as configuration/series dependent rather than fixed.

Winches

A factory hydraulic rear winch is available for the D8R II. It shares pilot hydraulics with the ripper lift/lower and blade tilt circuits per the parts catalog, and cannot be fitted together with the rear waste-disposal striker bar arrangement. Published winch figures: about 1790 kg (3950 lb) weight, 15 L (4 US gal) oil capacity, 337 mm (13.25 in) drum width, 610 mm (24 in) flange diameter. Large aftermarket PTO-driven towing winches (rated to roughly 600 hp) are also sold as installation packages for this dozer class, mainly for pipeline, mining and recovery work.

Drawbars & counterweights

A drawbar group is offered for straight towing duty. It occupies the same rear mounting and hydraulic provision as the winch and rear ripper, so only one of ripper, winch, drawbar or rear waste-disposal striker bar mounts at a time. Front and rear counterweight groups rebalance the machine for whichever rear tool is fitted; the rear counterweight part differs depending on whether a winch/drawbar or a ripper is mounted.

Cab / ROPS guarding for forestry & waste configs

Standard cab is a suspension-isolation-mounted, sealed enclosure meeting ROPS/FOPS, with sealed electrical connectors and halogen lighting. A waste-handling/forestry guarding package adds a hinged, quick-release radiator guard, electrically raisable crankcase and chassis debris guards, pivot-shaft and final-drive seal guards, perforated engine hood and side panels, an optional raised prescreener and turbine air precleaner, a reversing cooling fan, a trash-resistant radiator core, and relocated ROPS-mounted A/C condenser and lighting to keep components out of the debris path. A sound-suppression option is also offered for noise-sensitive sites but cannot combine with certain fan/radiator arrangements.

Hydraulic arrangement (front/rear tools)

Front implement hydraulics run through a bulldozer valve bank handling blade lift and tilt (single or dual-tilt cylinder circuits depending on blade option), fed by a piston-type, load-sensing implement pump rated around 228 L/min (60 gpm) plus a separate steering pump rated around 285 L/min (75 gpm); hydraulic tank capacity is about 72 L (19 gal). Rear-tool functions (ripper lift/lower and tilt, or winch reel-in/reel-out) route through a shared pilot control valve, reflecting that only one rear attachment is fitted at a time.

On a D8R II the PIN/serial plate sits high on the left-hand rear frame rail near the fuel tank, an area that can be hidden by a ripper, winch, or pusher attachment; the number is also stamped directly into the frame steel next to the plate as a backup if the plate is missing or unreadable. Read the first three letters as the model/configuration prefix (e.g., 6YZ or AKA), then the digits that follow as the sequential unit number within that block (e.g., AKA00123).

Frequently asked questions

What engine powers the Caterpillar D8R Series II?

The D8R Series II uses a Cat 3406E TA turbocharged-aftercooled diesel inline-six, displacing 14.6 L (893 cu in). It is rated at approximately 231 kW (310 hp) net and 252 kW (338 hp) gross at 2000 rpm. That is a step up from the original D8R's 3406C DITA engine, which the Series II replaced in 2000.

What is the operating weight of the Caterpillar D8R Series II?

Operating weight runs around 37,600 kg (82,960 lb) in standard configuration. Published weights range from roughly 29,600 kg (65,200 lb) for a stripped base tractor to about 37,900 kg (83,500 lb) fully equipped with blade and ripper, so exact weight varies by configuration.

What replaced the Caterpillar D8R Series II?

Caterpillar replaced the D8R Series II with the D8T, introduced in 2004 with ACERT emissions technology. The D8T carried similar power, around 231 kW (310 hp) net, but added the electronic emissions controls the D8R II never had.

What D8R II owners discuss

What engine is actually in a Cat D8R Series II, and what should owners expect from it?
The D8R Series II runs the Cat 3406E, a turbocharged direct-injection diesel with HEUI hydraulic-electronic unit injection and an electronic (ADEM) engine control module, not the mechanically governed 3406C used in the first-generation D8R. Flywheel output is commonly quoted around 310 hp (231 kW), with gross figures nearer 335-340 hp (250-253 kW) depending on the rating source - some general spec summaries still list the older 3406C figures for this machine, so confirm the engine plate rather than trust a generic spec sheet. Because HEUI injection depends on actuation oil pressure, a failing turbocharger or boost leak on this engine shows up as heavy black smoke and a sudden loss of power under load even when the injectors test fine on the bench - one owner chased a cracked-cylinder repair and reground valves before the real cause turned out to be the turbo. A patched wiring harness near the valve cover has also been found causing a false injector fault code that looked like a fuel problem.
What electrical or sensor faults come up most often on the D8R II?
Powertrain ECM complaints center on the transmission output speed sensor circuits reading erratic or intermittent, and forward/reverse clutch solenoid circuits showing current below normal - both usually trace back to an open circuit or bad connector rather than the sensor or solenoid itself. Another recurring one is an open circuit on the engine cooling fan's push/pull solenoid circuit, which sets a fan-control fault. Mechanics who work on these machines consistently note the ECM itself is rarely the actual failure point; it is normally the last component to suspect after wiring and sensors have been checked. Have your dealer verify any powertrain fault-code diagnosis before swapping an ECM, solenoid, or sensor.
One track loses power under load but the machine steers fine at idle - what does that usually mean?
This points at the steering clutch circuit rather than the final drive. Steering clutches are hydraulically applied, so a clutch that slips only under load usually means it isn't getting or holding full oil pressure - low pump output, a leaking clutch piston seal, or on machines with fingertip steering controls, an electrical fault in the proportional steering valve solenoid rather than a purely mechanical problem. A sudden onset points more toward a clutch disc lining failure; a gradual fade points toward a slow pressure or seal leak. Steering and braking are safety-critical systems - have your dealer verify clutch pressures and valve operation before the machine goes back to work.
Why does the transmission or torque converter run hot on this machine?
Reported causes include a plugged transmission oil cooler or restricted radiator flow, oil aeration or slugging inside the converter housing, and a leaking park-brake clutch that pulls extra oil to stay released and generates heat as it slips. Leakage in the steering circuit can also starve the transmission pump of oil. The usual diagnostic order is checking transmission pump pressure and torque-converter outlet pressure first, then looking at brake band adjustment and cooler flow, before condemning the converter itself.
What's the real-world undercarriage wear pattern owners report?
The D8R II shipped with sealed-and-lubricated track using a positive pin-retention design, with a cartridge-sealed premium undercarriage offered as an upgrade option. Owners doing overhauls consistently report that side wear on rollers and idlers is almost always a track-frame alignment issue rather than plain wear. Track chain doesn't stretch in the traditional sense - the pins and bushings wear internally and the pitch grows over time. A recurring warning from people who've done this work: replacing idlers, rollers, and sprockets while keeping an old, already-worn chain, and not rotating components as a matched set, accelerates wear on the new parts. Undercarriage is treated as one system, not a pile of individual wear items.
A final drive lost gear teeth on the D8R II - is a full rebuild really necessary, or can the broken piece just be replaced?
This matches a documented field case: a broken tooth on the center gear also damaged an adjacent gear in the same housing. The dealer position in that case was that once one gear fails inside a final drive, the full gear set, both housings, and the bearings should be treated as suspect and replaced together rather than swapping only the visibly broken part, since debris from the failure circulates through the whole housing and final drives operate at extremely high torque. Piecemeal replacement is considered a false economy by most mechanics who've dealt with this. Have your dealer verify the full extent of internal damage before committing to a partial repair.
What should a buyer check before purchasing a used D8R II?
Get the full service history and hours on major components, especially the undercarriage, since that's typically the largest line item in a rebuild. Confirm which build era you're looking at, since the Series II generation used the electronically controlled 3406E rather than the earlier mechanical 3406C, which affects parts and diagnostic approach. Insist on hearing the machine run rather than relying on a static listing or photos. Walk the main frame and push arm area looking for cracks. If the machine has been sitting, check whether the engine turns over freely before attempting a start, change the engine oil and filters, do a pre-lube, and drain and flush old fuel before first start. Signs of neglected oil changes (heavy varnish, sludge buildup, chronic topping-off instead of changes) are a red flag for how the rest of the machine was maintained.
