D4D serial number reference
The PIN/serial tag sits on the upper rear face of the steering clutch case at the back of the tractor; if the tag has been knocked off, the number is often stamped directly into that housing. Fallback locations on some units include the left rear of the bevel gear case, the lower right rear of the firewall near the right steering brake pedal, or the frame rail beside the engine. The prefix is the leading letters-plus-digits code shown before the unit number (for example the 78A in 78A1273) and identifies the plant and production series; the digits that follow are the sequential unit count within that series, used to bracket parts and service manual coverage.
