Pull grease from the wedge-lock points periodically and check for grit, water intrusion, or a paste-like texture that signals the interval has stretched too long. Track wedge-to-pin play by hand-rocking a coupled tool at each service interval and logging any change; a widening gap between checks flags accelerating wear before it becomes a knock under load. On the hydraulic CW-40, watch cylinder cycle time and lock-indicator response for early drift.

The most common complaint is a wedge that sticks or hesitates to release, usually traced to hardened grease packed into the wedge track or trapped hydraulic pressure that needs a couple of clearing cycles. Worn pin pockets show up as a clunk on curl or breakout and require wedge or pocket replacement once play exceeds tolerance, since a loose fit accelerates wear on the coupled tool's own pins. On the hydraulic CW-40, seal weeping at the lock cylinder is the typical repair point; clean and grease the wedge track first before assuming a hydraulic fault.

A full rebuild centers on the wedge, hook, hinge pins, and mounting bushings, all of which wear as a set and are best replaced together rather than piecemeal to keep the tool-side fit tight. The wedge-lock return spring should be checked for fatigue during any teardown, since a weak spring slows lock engagement and can mask itself as a hydraulic issue on the CW-40. On the hydraulic version, cylinder reseal is the other major rebuild item once holding force under load starts to drift.

Dusty and demolition-site conditions pack the wedge track faster than the standard grease interval accounts for, so owners running in quarry or demolition duty tighten the greasing frequency and add a periodic full purge to clear grit-laden grease before it turns abrasive. Cold-weather operation calls for a grease that stays workable at low temperature so the wedge cycles fully rather than binding partway. Wet or coastal environments push corrosion at exposed pins and the wedge-lock housing, so a visual corrosion check belongs alongside the routine wear inspection in those conditions.
