Because the exciter seals are a known weak point, watch drain oil from both drum housings for water intrusion or metal fines before failure shows up as bearing noise. Track relay and connector resistance at the vibrate-engage and water-spray circuits; corrosion here causes intermittent vibration dropout long before a hard failure. Sample Cat DEO, HYDO Advanced 10, and ELC fluids on a fixed schedule since this MUI engine has no ECM to flag problems.

Most CB-634C complaints trace to three things: exciter bearing seals weeping oil into the drum shell, rubber isolator mounts cracking between frame and drum after years of vibration, and corroded relays or connectors on the vibrate-engage and water-spray wiring. Pull drum end covers to check for oil residue before assuming a bearing is scored. Replace isolator mounts in matched pairs to keep vibration balanced side to side. Clean and reseal harness connectors near the water tank rather than just swapping relays, since the corrosion usually starts at the pins.

Overhaul work centers on the exciter shaft and bearing housings in each drum, the propel pump and drive motor, and the 3116T's turbocharger and injection pump. Reseal or rebuild exciter housings once drain oil shows water or metal contamination, before leakage appears at the drum shell. Check turbocharger shaft play and injector pop-pressure during major engine work, since the mechanical fuel system carries no ECM to warn of drift. Inspect articulation bushings and steering cylinder pins for slack; wear here is as common as bearing wear.

Drain the 1200 L water spray tank, lines, and pump fully before freezing weather to prevent cracked fittings and a seized pump. In hot, dusty asphalt work, shorten air filter and engine oil intervals and check the radiator and oil cooler cores more often for packed debris. Before wet-season paving, confirm spray bar nozzles clear evenly across both drums to avoid drum pickup and surface tearing. Grease articulation and drum bearing points more often in wash-down or coastal settings, where moisture intrusion is already this machine's main wiring weak point.
