Regularly obtain engine oil samples during PM1 intervals to track soot loading and viscosity changes. For marine or industrial units, perform periodic hydraulic oil and transmission oil sampling to identify particle contamination or oxidation before component failure occurs.

Address fuel system issues by inspecting the electronic unit injector (EUI) system and checking for leaks in the lift pump. If air intake performance drops, inspect the turbocharger and aftercooler core for fouling or damage. Monitor oil pressure at idle; deviations from the 100–150 kPa (15–22 psi) range may indicate bearing wear or turbocharger issues requiring immediate investigation.

The C16 supports extended engine life through wet replaceable liners, allowing for cylinder reconditioning without block machining. During major overhauls, inspect the forged-steel crankshaft and seven main bearings. Key torque specifications must be strictly followed, such as 400–450 Nm (295–332 lb-ft) for cylinder head bolts and 150–170 Nm (111–125 lb-ft) for connecting-rod bolts to ensure structural integrity.

In high-dust or quarry environments, increase air filter inspections to daily intervals and clean radiators more frequently. For marine applications, inspect freshwater heat exchanger tubes every 500 hours for scaling. In extreme cold, ensure the ECM cold-start strategy is functioning and verify that all fuel lines are primed. Always replace coolant with a fresh 50/50 ethylene glycol mix annually to prevent freeze-up.
