Run oil sampling on the 3116T every 500 hours. This mechanical unit-injector engine has no ECM to flag fuel dilution or coolant intrusion, so lab trends catch injector and head-gasket problems early. Sample the 189 L hydrostatic circuit just as often; propel pumps, motors, and screed-lift cylinders all draw from the same hydraulic tank, so one contamination event affects the whole drivetrain. Track coolant corrosion-inhibitor level too, since overheating on a hydrostatic paver shows up as sluggish propel long before a gauge complains.

Expect hydrostatic propel pump and wheel motor wear from constant stop-start paving cycles; listen for whine or loss of crawl-speed control first. Screed heater burners and thermostats on both the Extend-A-Mat B and Pavemaster 10B foul from fuel varnish, so clean nozzles before blaming the element. Auger gearbox seals weep after years of mix-temperature cycling, so check gearbox oil level often. Because the 3116T runs mechanical unit injectors with no self-diagnostics, rough idle or smoke usually traces to injector calibration drift, not sensors.

High-hour AP-900B units typically need turbocharger rebuilds on the 3116T (shaft play, oil seepage) before the core engine does. Budget for injection pump and unit-injector reconditioning, since mechanical timing drifts with wear. Hydrostatic pumps and wheel motors are the other major rebuild item; internal wear shows as reduced travel speed under load. On the paving side, rebuild screed vibrator shaft bearings, replace tamper-bar bushings, and inspect the mainframe and hopper wing pivots for crack propagation from years of vibration.

Cold starts on the mechanical 3116T get harder below freezing since there is no ECM-managed cold-start strategy; keep the fuel/water separator drained and run winter-blend fuel to avoid gelling in the unit injectors. Protect the 37 L cooling system with full-strength antifreeze rated for the region. In hot-mix summer paving, watch hydraulic oil temperature under sustained hydrostatic propel load and keep the oil cooler fins clean. Screed heaters need more burn time on cold mornings to bring plates to temperature before laying mix.
