Pull engine oil samples at each change interval and watch for coolant intrusion, a known wear point on these wet-liner blocks, plus metal content in transmission and final drive oil signaling gear or bearing wear. Track chain pitch measurement flags undercarriage wear before it costs a sprocket set. Watch pony-motor fuel and ignition condition on 20A-block units, since hard cold starts strain the main engine clutch.

Common failure points on the 977 are steering clutch and brake band wear from the hand-lever linkage (20A-block, and 53A pre-1964) or pedal linkage (post-53A4797), fuel injector fouling on the mechanical D318/D333 pump, and pony-motor starting failures from worn magnetos or fouled fuel bowls. Track pin and bushing turn plus equalizer bar bushing wear are frequent undercarriage repairs. Radiator core leaks and water pump seal wear show up often given the era's cooling system tolerances. Parts sourcing runs through vintage and NOS suppliers, not a current dealer counter.

Major rebuild work centers on the D318/D333, later turbocharged D333T, block: liner, piston, and ring replacement, crankshaft bearing inspection, and injection pump and governor overhaul. Steering clutch and brake band assemblies wear through their linings and need periodic relining or full rebuild, since the direct-drive, non-powershift design routes all torque through them. Final drives and the 5-speed gearbox with 2-speed transfer case warrant teardown inspection at high hours. Loader lift and tilt cylinders often need reseal and rod resurfacing after decades of service.

Cold-start reliability hinges on the gasoline pony motor fitted to 20A and 53A-block units: check its fuel, ignition points, and battery condition before winter, and drain water from the fuel tank sump regularly. Use season-appropriate engine oil viscosity and check antifreeze concentration before freeze season, since these cast-iron cooling systems corrode without proper inhibitor levels. In dusty or abrasive conditions, service the air cleaner oil bath and track and undercarriage grease points more often, since the direct-drive mechanical driveline has no electronic derate to protect it from contamination.
