This 963 has no ECM or fault-code diagnostics, so scheduled oil sampling is the main early-warning tool. Pull samples from the 3304 engine, the hydrostatic system, and both final drives at each service interval and watch for metal content that signals pump, motor, or planetary wear before a side loses drive. Track hydrostatic charge pressure and case-drain flow at each check; a slow pressure drop usually means swash-plate or piston wear building in one pump or motor long before symptoms show up in the seat.

Most repair calls on this generation trace back to the twin hydrostatic drive: input shaft seals leaking into the pump drive gearbox, worn charge pumps, and swash-plate wear that causes one track to creep or lose power under load. On the 3304, expect injection pump and injector work as hours climb on a mechanical fuel system with no electronic tuning. Track adjuster yokes, idler seals, and roller bearings leak oil and wear steadily on both Standard and LGP undercarriages and are routine corrective jobs.

Plan hydrostatic pump and motor rebuilds around swash-plate and piston wear rather than a fixed hour number; loss of one-side power or rising case-drain flow is the trigger. Final drive planetaries typically need an overhaul once oil samples show consistent metal or gear noise develops under load. Undercarriage renewal, covering track chain, rollers, idlers, and sprockets on the Heavy-Duty frames, is the highest-cost rebuild item on either Standard or LGP shoes. The 3304 itself is a good inframe or top-end candidate once compression drops or oil consumption climbs.

Cold starts on the naturally aspirated 3304 benefit from a coolant heater and correct-viscosity engine and hydrostatic oil; thickened fuel or hydrostatic oil in freezing weather slows charge-pump response and can mask a real pump problem, so check antifreeze concentration before winter. In hot, dusty, or abrasive ground conditions, shorten air cleaner and radiator core cleaning intervals and inspect LGP wide shoes and track frames more often, since packed material accelerates roller and idler wear faster than on Standard-gauge machines.
