Track coolant condition too, since these engines run hot in continuous loading cycles. Trend results over several samples rather than reacting to one reading.

Expect hydraulic hose and fitting leaks first on a loader this age; check the loader linkage, tilt cylinder, and steering circuit lines under load, not just at idle. Wet-disc brake seals inside the final drives are a common failure point once housings weep oil at the wheel hubs. Hard or delayed shifting usually traces to worn powershift clutch packs or a tired torque converter rather than the valve body. Inspect the articulation hitch and center pin for play, a frequent wear point on high-hour units.

Top-end rebuild on the 3116 (injectors, turbocharger, valve train) is the usual major engine job once oil consumption or smoke climbs. Final drive and no-spin differential housings warrant a full teardown at major overhaul, since planetary gear sets and brake discs wear together. Torque converter and powershift clutch packs are next, especially on loaders that spent years in load-and-carry cycles. Loader linkage pins, bushings, and articulation bearings usually need replacement in the same overhaul window.

Cold starts on the 3116 need a working ether starting aid and correct coolant concentration checked before winter; verify the block heater if the loader sits outside. In hot, dusty quarry or yard settings, shorten air filter and radiator core cleaning intervals well below the standard hours-based schedule. Check hydraulic oil viscosity grade against ambient temperature swings, and inspect the articulation and axle seals more often where mud and grit pack into the joints.
