Run oil sampling every service interval on the D343 — its camshaft-driven fuel priming pump is a known diaphragm-failure point that leaks diesel straight into the crankcase, and a rising fuel-dilution trend on the report catches it before it wipes bearings. Sample torque converter/powershift oil too; climbing aluminum or clutch-material counts signal wet-clutch wear long before a stall or slip shows up on the job. Track coolant condition against corrosion-inhibitor levels, since there is no ECM here to flag it electronically.

Fuel-smelling, overfull crankcase oil points straight to the priming pump diaphragm or the injection pump shaft seal — replace it before startup, not after. Aluminum showing up in the transmission filter means clutch-pack or bushing wear in the powershift; pull and inspect rather than just re-filtering and hoping. On cold starts, let the glow plugs finish their cycle fully — this pre-combustion-chamber engine does not tolerate lugging cold, and ether is dangerous with plugs already glowing hot. Re-torque tamping-tip bolts on the compaction wheels regularly; loose tips are the most common landfill-duty complaint on this machine.

Because the D343 is fully mechanical, valve lash and injection timing need hands-on adjustment at scheduled hours rather than a code reading — build that into any inframe overhaul plan. Torque converter and powershift clutch packs are the other major wear item; plan a rebuild or exchange once oil sampling shows a sustained aluminum trend rather than waiting for a stall in the field. Compaction wheels take the worst structural abuse in landfill service — inspect the push-arm and blade mounting structure for fatigue cracking at overhaul, and replace tamping tips and wear plates as complete sets, not piecemeal.

Landfill and demolition debris wraps wire, film, and cable around axles and hydraulic lines — walk the machine down daily and clear wrap before it cuts a hose or seal. In cold climates, lean on the glow-plug system fully before cranking; this mechanical engine has no cold-start electronics to compensate for a rushed start. Check the fuel tank and water separator often, since debris-site fuel handling introduces more contamination than a typical earthmoving job. Clear the radiator core of ash, dust, and film buildup regularly to keep the D343 from running hot in summer duty cycles.
