Caterpillar 814
Maintenance schedule, common problems & OEM parts breakdown
The Cat 814 is Caterpillar's current-production wheel dozer, a rubber-tired machine that pairs track-dozer pushing power with wheel-loader mobility for surface mining cleanup, coal stockpiling, road maintenance, and reclamation work. The present-day 814 (built since 2021) runs the Cat C7.1 engine rated at roughly 249 hp (186 kW) net and 284 hp gross, offered in Tier 4 Final/Stage V emissions trim or a MAR-1/Tier 3-equivalent variant for less-regulated markets, with an operating weight near 22,000 kg (48,500 lb) that shifts with the blade fitted. It ships with a straight blade (2.85 m³ / 3.72 yd³) or a coal blade (10.55 m³ / 13.8 yd³); no ripper or winch is offered on this chassis. It replaces the 814K (2018-2021), which itself followed the 814F/814F II and the original 814/814B.
Caterpillar has reused the 814 model number since the 1970s, so the badge spans several unrelated engine families: the original 814/814B ran Cat 3306 and 2236 engines, the 1990s-2000s 814F/814F II moved through 3306, 3176C, and C9 power, and only the 814K and the current 814 share the C7.1. Across generations the changes track emissions rules and controls: electronic powershift with APECS for smoother, momentum-preserving shifts, centralized ground-level service points with grouped grease fittings, and quieter, better-sealed cabs. For the used and parts market this history matters because parts interchange mostly holds within the C7.1-era pair (814K and current 814) and breaks down against the F-series and vintage machines, so the serial prefix and build date decide which engine and driveline family a given 814 actually belongs to before ordering.

814 fluids & capacities
| System | Capacity | Recommended fluid |
|---|---|---|
| Engine crankcase (with filter) — Cat C7.1 | 20 L (5.3 US gal) | Cat DEO-ULS, or an oil meeting Cat ECF-3, API CJ-4, ACEA E9. Multigrade Cat diesel engine oil selected by ambient-temperature band per the standard Cat DEO viscosity chart; exact chart cutoffs for this engine not confirmed from primary source text — verify grade selection with the OMM or dealer for your climate. |
| Cooling system | 73 L (19.3 US gal) on Tier 3 / Stage IIIA engine rating; 81 L (21.4 US gal) on Tier 4 Final / Stage V engine rating | Cat ELC (Extended Life Coolant), premixed or concentrate to the coolant/water ratio specified for the ambient range; maintain with Cat Extender at scheduled intervals instead of full ELC change-out. |
| Fuel tank | 500 L (132.1 US gal) | ULS diesel fuel meeting Cat fuel specification; biodiesel blends limited per Cat guidance for this engine family. |
| Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) tank — Tier 4 Final / Stage V engine rating only | 15.9 L (4.2 US gal) | DEF meeting ISO 22241 / API certification. |
| Transmission — Cat planetary powershift | 50 L (13.2 US gal) | Cat TDTO (Transmission/Drive Train Oil) or TDTO-TMS synthetic, viscosity grade selected by ambient temperature (SAE 10W/30/50 band). This wheel dozer has no separate bevel-gear/steering-compartment fluid split in the published refill chart — steering is hydraulic/articulated, not mechanical bevel-gear, so only a single transmission capacity is listed. |
| Final drives — front axle (differential and final drive combined) | 65.1 L (17.2 US gal) | Cat TDTO, matched to the transmission fill grade. |
| Final drives — rear axle (differential and final drive combined) | 65.1 L (17.2 US gal) | Cat TDTO, matched to the transmission fill grade. |
| Hydraulic system — implement/steering circuit, total system fill (tank, lines, cylinders) | 129.1 L (34.1 US gal) | Cat HYDO Advanced, an anti-wear hydraulic oil with rust/corrosion protection and rapid air release; factory fill on this platform. |
| Hydraulic tank only | 74.9 L (19.8 US gal) | Cat HYDO Advanced, same fluid as full hydraulic system fill. |
| Pivot shaft / articulation hitch and steering points | Grease point, no separate fluid reservoir — no dedicated capacity published | Cat multipurpose grease (NLGI 2), or Cat Advanced 3Moly Grease where extended-interval greasing is specified. Grouped grease points cover steering hitch, articulation, and rear-axle trunnions for quick service access. |
| Grease — general chassis/pin points | Not applicable (grease gun service, no bulk capacity) | Cat multipurpose grease (Cat MPGM), NLGI 2 grade; Cat Advanced 3Moly Grease as the extended-life alternative at high-load pin joints. |
Capacities are refill values from factory literature — always fill to the dipstick/sight gauge, not the number.

Servicing the 814 beyond the schedule
Predictive Maintenance & Fluid Analysis
Run S·O·S sampling on the C7.1 engine oil, powershift transmission/torque converter oil, front and rear axle differential oil, and hydraulic tank oil at each planned interval. Trend wear metals in the axle housings, since the 12-degree oscillating rear axle and articulation hitch load the differential and trunnion bearings unevenly. Watch torque converter oil temperature and APECS shift behavior for early clutch-pack wear signs before a shift-quality complaint turns into a transmission teardown.
Corrective & Common Repairs
Expect blade cutting edge and end bit wear from coal and spoil dozing, especially on the higher-capacity coal blade. Articulation hitch pins, steering cylinder pins, and rear axle trunnion bushings loosen when grease intervals slip, showing up as play in the steering. Oil-disc brakes and tires take the brunt of grade work and rock or coal loading, so check brake wear indicators and tire cuts on schedule. Fuel filters clog faster on dusty mine and landfill sites.
Overhaul & Rebuild Points
Major driveline work centers on the planetary powershift transmission and torque converter clutch packs, plus the front and rear axle differentials and final drives feeding the oscillating rear axle. C7.1 overhaul points include the turbocharger, injectors, and valve lash adjustment at extended-hour milestones. Steering and lift/tilt cylinders need periodic reseal, and the box-section rear frame and blade push arms warrant crack inspection once the machine accumulates several thousand hours in mining or quarry duty.
Seasonal & Environment Servicing
In cold climates, fit the block heater, confirm ether-start operation, and switch to cold-weather engine oil and coolant grades before winter shutdown. In hot, dusty coal or quarry sites, shorten air filter and cab pressurizer filter intervals and clean the radiator, hydraulic cooler, and A/C condenser more often to fight coal-dust loading. On wet or muddy reclamation sites, check axle breathers and hitch/trunnion seals for water intrusion after every wash-down.

814 fault codes & troubleshooting
| Code | Meaning | Likely cause | What to do |
|---|---|---|---|
| SPN 110/FMI 0 | Engine coolant temperature above normal operating range | Low coolant level, blocked radiator core, failed fan drive/fan clutch, or faulty coolant temperature sensor | Check coolant level and radiator for debris, verify fan operation, then check sensor wiring before replacing the sensor |
| SPN 111/FMI 1 | Engine coolant level below minimum threshold | External coolant leak at hose, radiator or water pump, or a failed level sensor/loose connector | Inspect for visible leaks, top off coolant to spec, check sensor connector and float operation |
| SPN 100/FMI 1 | Engine oil pressure below normal for current speed and load | Low oil level, clogged oil filter, worn oil pump, or failed oil pressure sensor | Stop engine, check oil level and filter condition, verify sensor wiring, then check pump pressure before returning to service |
| SPN 168/FMI 1 | Electrical system (battery/ECM supply) voltage below normal | Weak or discharged battery, corroded terminals or ground straps, or failing alternator | Test battery state of charge, clean and tighten terminals and grounds, check alternator output |
| SPN 190/FMI 0 | Engine speed exceeded the calibrated maximum limit | Downhill or loaded coast without engine braking, torque converter/transmission control fault, or faulty engine speed/timing sensor | Review the operating conditions that led to the event, check transmission control response, inspect speed/timing sensor signal |
| SPN 3226/FMI 1 | Diesel exhaust fluid (DEF) level below the low-level threshold | DEF tank not topped off, failed DEF level sender, or DEF tank heater/sender circuit fault | Refill with correct-spec DEF, verify sender connector, confirm code clears after refill |
| SPN 3364/FMI 2 | Diesel particulate filter soot-load reading erratic or inconsistent with expected regeneration behavior | Incomplete or repeatedly interrupted regeneration cycles, plugged differential pressure sensor lines, or excessive idle duty cycle | Allow a full parked/stationary regeneration to complete, check DPF pressure sensor lines for blockage, review duty cycle |
| SPN 5246/FMI 0 or 15 | SCR/DEF system dosing or quality fault severe enough to trigger a performance derate warning | Contaminated or incorrect DEF, DEF dosing/injector fault, or NOx sensor issue | Drain and refill with correct DEF, check dosing system for leaks or clogs, clear the code with Cat ET after correction |
Codes and remedies are general guidance for this model family — always confirm with diagnostic tooling and your dealer before major repairs.
814 attachments & work tools
Blades
Two blade options for the 814: Straight (S) blade rated 2.85 m³ (3.72 yd³), 3.7 m (12 ft) wide, 1.0 m (3.3 ft) tall, about 1,360 kg (3,000 lb); and Coal blade rated 10.55 m³ (13.8 yd³), 4.3 m (14.2 ft) wide, 1.5 m (4.8 ft) tall, about 2,010 kg (4,429 lb). No SU, U, or VPAT blade is cataloged for this wheel-dozer platform - those designations belong to the D-series crawler dozer line, not the wheel dozer family. Max tilt is roughly 0.8 m (2.6 ft) on the straight blade and 0.9 m (3.1 ft) on the coal blade, with about 0.5 m (1.6 ft) dig depth on either.
Rippers
No factory rear ripper is offered for the 814. Single- or multi-shank rippers are a track-type tractor (D-series) fitment; this wheel dozer's rear frame and hydraulics carry no ripper linkage or lift provision. Ripping/scarifying duty in this class is normally handled by the blade cutting edge or by a separate ripping machine, not an attachment on the 814 itself.
Winches
No factory winch option is documented for the 814. Cable/hydraulic winches are cataloged for larger track-type tractors used in logging and pipeline pulling, not for wheel dozers of this class - the 814's rear end is built around a towing drawbar, not a winch mount. Confirm with a dealer if a winch has ever been fitted to this chassis; it is not a listed factory arrangement.
Drawbars/counterweights
A rear drawbar hitch with pin is standard equipment, sized for towing loads rather than winch line pull. Drawbar pull capability is in the range of roughly 150 kN (34,600 lbf) class, varying with tire and ballast setup. A front counterweight is available as a factory option, used mainly to rebalance the machine when running the heavier, wider coal blade.
Cab/ROPS guarding for forestry/waste configs
The cab sits on an internal four-post ROPS/FOPS structure, sound-suppressed and pressurized with filtered air, plus a rear camera and panoramic mirror for site visibility. Standard guarding covers the crankcase/belly, powertrain, and driveshaft; a Waste Handling Arrangement adds radiator, engine-compartment, and tilt-cylinder-line guards along with extra cab-air filtration for debris-heavy landfill/waste sites. No dedicated forestry canopy or screen guarding package is documented for this wheel-dozer platform - that configuration is far more common on track-type dozers; verify site-specific screen kits with a dealer.
Hydraulic arrangement (front/rear tools)
Blade lift and tilt draw off a variable-displacement piston pump flowing about 89 L/min (23.5 gpm) at 2,200 rpm, run electro-hydraulically from the cab; steering uses a separate circuit at roughly 147 L/min (38.8 gpm), also at 2,200 rpm. All implement hydraulic capacity is committed to the front-mounted blade - there is no rear-tool circuit, since the machine has no rear ripper or winch provision. The rear drawbar connection is a mechanical hitch only, not hydraulically actuated.

814 serial number reference
The PIN/serial plate on an 814-family wheel dozer is mounted on the front frame, typically on the right-hand side near the base of the cab or along the frame rail below the operator's platform, visible from ground level. Pre-2001 machines show an 8-character serial number (3-character prefix plus 5-digit sequence) stamped directly; 2001-and-later machines carry a full 17-character PIN, with the same prefix-plus-sequence format embedded in the last 8 characters — read the first 3 characters of that trailing block as the model/plant prefix.
| Prefix | Identifies | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 90P | 814 (original wheel dozer, early 1970 production) | Earliest 814 serial range, tractor/power-shift configuration. Runs roughly 90P1 and up. |
| 14R | 814 (original wheel dozer), 1971 onward | 14R00001-00149 covers the earliest run; 14R00150-and-up is documented as powered by the 3306 engine, marking an engine change partway through the range. Tractor/power-shift driveline. |
| 16Z | 814B wheel dozer | 16Z00001-and-up, tractor/power-shift configuration, powered by the 3306 engine. Production begins in the early 1980s. |
| BGF | 814F wheel dozer | BGF1-and-up, documented from 1999. Powered by the 3176C engine. Oscillating-axle wheel dozer chassis, no Std/XL/LGP track-dozer-style configuration options. |
| BXG | 814F Series 2 / 814F II wheel dozer | BXG00001-and-up. Powered by the C9 ACERT engine with electronic clutch-pressure control and a planetary powershift transmission, meeting Tier 3/Stage IIIA emissions. |
| WCM | 814K wheel dozer | WCM1-and-up, full-machine PIN range covering cab, chassis, electrical, and engine-compartment documentation for 2018-model-year build. Powered by the C7.1 ACERT engine (Tier 4 Final). |
| T1Z | 814K wheel dozer | T1Z1-and-up, a second full-machine 814K PIN range alongside WCM (also seen tied to 2018-model-year build documentation, including the DEF system). Confirm which prefix applies to a given unit with your dealer. |
| 11A | current-generation 814 wheel dozer | Cat's own model-code tag for the post-814K 814, used in official product-brochure and technical-specification document titles ('814 (11A)'). Carries a C7.1 engine rated 249 net hp, offered in Tier 4 Final/Stage V or Tier 3/Stage IIIA-equivalent tune. Not verified against an actual PIN plate, so confirm the literal serial prefix with your dealer. |
Frequently asked questions
What engine powers the Cat 814 wheel dozer?
The current-production Cat 814 uses the Cat C7.1 diesel, rated at roughly 249 hp (186 kW) net and 284 hp gross, built in Tier 4 Final/Stage V emissions trim or a MAR-1/Tier 3-equivalent variant for non-regulated markets.
What is the operating weight of the Cat 814?
Operating weight runs around 22,000 kg (48,500 lb), varying with the blade fitted -- the straight blade and the larger coal blade configuration each shift the figure slightly.
What did the Cat 814 replace, and has the model number been reused?
The current 814 (2021-present) succeeded the 814K (2018-2021). Caterpillar has reused the '814' designation since the 1970s across the original 814/814B, the 814F/814F II, the 814K, and today's 814, so each generation carries a different engine family.
