Track bank-to-bank exhaust temperature and blow-by trends; imbalance between the two V-12 halves is an early sign of injector or turbo wear on one side only. Monitor coolant condition for the quad-turbo aftercooled charge-air system, and log tire pressure and temperature on the six 55/80R63 tires to catch overload conditions before a casing failure.

Expect turbocharger and unit-injector replacement on the quad-turbo 3524B before major overhaul; each V-12 bank feeds its own pair of turbos, so one side can fail independently. Torque-converter and transmission clutch wear shows up from sustained loaded-grade hauling; watch shift quality and converter stall speed. The oil-cooled multiple-disc brakes and wheel-end bearings take the brunt of stopping 557,900 kg (1,230,000 lb) loaded, so brake wear-indicator checks run frequent. Hoist-cylinder seal leaks and cracking at the hitch/frame pivot are common from repeated dump cycles and shock loading in pit operation.

Major engine work on the 797 means overhauling what is effectively two V-12s sharing one crankcase; plan top-end and bottom-end rebuilds bank by bank, not as one generic 24-cylinder job. Rebuild the torque-converter/transmission assembly and the differential/final-drive planetaries as matched sets. Frame, hitch, and hoist structure need dye-penetrant weld inspection at major overhaul. Because the 5YW-prefix 797 ran only 1998-2002 before the 797B took over, some rebuild components are harder to source than for later trucks; confirm parts availability with your dealer before teardown.

Cold-climate starts on the 24-cylinder mechanical 3524B need block/jacket-water heaters and ether-assist systems in good order; a no-start on a truck this size stalls a whole loading cycle. Watch for fuel gelling in the 3,785 L (1,000 gal) tank below freezing; switch to winter-blend fuel. In hot, dusty pit environments, clean engine and cab air filtration more often and keep the radiator core and quad-turbo aftercooler free of packed dust to avoid derating. Manage tire heat build-up on the 55/80R63 tires in high-ambient conditions to prevent casing damage.
