Watch the accumulator, not a dipstick - this hammer has no oil of its own to sample. Track blow feel and hose behavior at the coupler shift to shift; softening blows or hoses that hop under load signal nitrogen charge bleeding off before it becomes total power loss. Have accumulator pressure checked on a fixed schedule rather than waiting for symptoms, and log carrier hydraulic oil condition and temperature during hammer duty, since contaminated or overheated supply oil from the carrier drives piston and seal wear inside the hammer.

Lower bushing and moil-pin wear lead every repair list on a 70-class hammer. Measure bushing-to-chisel clearance regularly and rotate the lower bushing a quarter turn to expose a fresh wear face before condemning it; treat re-bushing as routine service, not a breakdown. Oil weeping at the front-head-to-cylinder-to-back-head joints is usually a through-bolt that backed off torque under vibration, not a blown seal - catch it early with a torque check, or it erodes the mating faces and turns into a full reseal job.

Full teardown centers on the piston and cylinder bore. Check the piston for scuffing, scoring, or mushrooming at the tool-contact end, and inspect the cylinder bore for galling or scratching that a worn or dry bushing, or contaminated carrier oil, can cause. Replace the full seal set, buffer pads, and O-rings as a set at reseal rather than piece by piece, since partially worn seals fail again quickly once the housing is open. Recheck through-bolt torque and accumulator charge as the final steps before returning the hammer to service.

Nitrogen pressure rises with temperature, so a charge set for summer runs high on a cold start and one set for winter runs soft once the hammer warms up; adjust the charge to the season, not just the fill-time ambient reading. On cold starts, idle the carrier and cycle hydraulics a few minutes before short breaker bursts, since hardened seals crack under an abrupt cold hit. In dusty or abrasive demolition and quarry work, shorten the bushing-grease interval and check side plates and buffers more often; grit accelerates wear fast.
