The 63 has no crankcase or coolant to sample — predictive care here means tracking the carrier's hydraulic oil cleanliness and temperature, since contaminated or overheated supply oil accelerates wear inside the hammer's cylinder and valve block. Log nitrogen accumulator pressure at every dealer check; a steady downward trend flags a slow gas leak before it shows up as sluggish or erratic blows. Watch grease consumption at the tool bushing — a sudden drop usually signals a clogged fitting, not reduced wear.

Through-bolt leakage is the 63's most common failure — oil weeping from the housing joint means the bolts backed off or the seal between front head and cylinder failed, not a random hose leak. Re-torque first; if seepage returns, pull the seal set. Blank-firing — running the piston with no ground resistance — is the next most common damage source, chewing up the tool bushing and pin far faster than normal wear; retrain operators before replacing parts. Mushroomed or chipped tool shanks usually trace back to the wrong tool-steel choice for the material being broken.

Rebuild the 63 around three wear zones: the piston and cylinder bore (check for scoring and step wear at the stroke ends), the tool bushing and front head bore (measure clearance against the housing's wear limit before deciding to bush or replace), and the accumulator diaphragm, which must be renewed at teardown since it releases nitrogen and cannot be reused. Hold the fixed 600-hour/1-year seal and diaphragm reseal regardless of symptoms — waiting for visible leakage means the hammer already ran degraded for hours.

Cold starts matter more than season on a hammer: let the carrier bring its hydraulic oil to operating temperature before running the 63 hard, since cold, viscous oil under-lubricates the valve and starves the cushioning chambers. On dusty or abrasive demolition sites, shorten the tool bushing grease interval below the standard 2-4 hours to keep debris from packing the bore. On wet sites, check through-bolts and seals more often, since intruded water displaces bushing grease faster than normal duty cycles.
