Watch hydraulic samples closely for water and metal from the felling head's shear or saw-disc drive and rotation motor. Because this model predates modern Cat telematics, track hour meters and oil condition manually rather than relying on remote alerts.

Expect recurring repairs around the felling head: shear blade or saw-disc wear, accumulator nitrogen loss, and wrist/tilt cylinder seal leaks from constant stump-level shock loading. Boom and stick pin bores wear egg-shaped from the same impact loads an excavator never sees. Radiator and hydraulic cooler cores clog with bark and needles and need frequent cleaning, or they cause overheating and slow hydraulic response. Because the 2390 shares undercarriage components with same era Cat excavators, sourcing rollers, idlers and travel motor parts is usually easier than sourcing felling head specific components.

At major hours, prioritize the felling head drive, rotation motor, swing bearing/gear and main hydraulic pump-motor set; these carry the heaviest shock and cyclic load on a feller buncher. Undercarriage rebuilds (sprockets, rollers, idlers, chain) follow the same wear pattern as the excavator chassis it's built on, so budget that interval like a 320-330 class excavator undercarriage, not a lighter machine. Inspect boom and stick pin bosses and welds for stress cracking before committing to a rebuild, since felling shock concentrates there.

Cold weather starts call for the correct engine oil viscosity and, in freezing climates, a block heater and fuel treated for gelling, since these machines often sit outside on landings overnight. In wet, muddy cutting blocks, check final drive and travel motor seals more often and clean debris from track frames daily to keep sprockets from packing with mud and slash. In hot, dry, dusty seasons, clean radiator and hydraulic cooler fins more frequently and watch for fire risk from bark and needle buildup around the engine bay and exhaust.
