Maintenance schedule, common problems & OEM parts breakdown

The Caterpillar D11 is the largest track-type tractor in Cat's standard crawler dozer line, built for mass earthmoving in large mines and quarries rather than general construction or grading work. It has run through four generations under three names: the D11N (1986-1996) with a Cat 3508 V8 diesel rated 770 hp; the D11R and D11R CD (1996-2008) stepping up to a Cat 3508B V8 with electronic unit injection at 850 hp net; the D11T and D11T CD (2008-early 2020s) moving to a Cat C32 ACERT V12 also at 850 hp net; and the current no-suffix D11 (07B build, 2021-present) on a Cat C32B V12 rated 850 hp forward and roughly 955-957 hp in reverse. Operating weight has climbed gradually across the line, from roughly 104,000 kg (229,000 lb) on the D11N to about 106,600 kg (235,000 lb) on today's D11, depending on blade and ripper fitment. The D11N itself replaced the Cat D10 in 1986 as Caterpillar's flagship dozer. Every generation has been offered in two configurations: a standard blade-equipped dozer, and a Carrydozer (CD) variant built without a blade but with a heavy-duty push-pull hitch and added rear counterweight for pushing scrapers or working spoil piles.

Each generation changed how the D11 is controlled and maintained more than it changed the basic layout. The D11R introduced fingertip hydraulic controls and electronic clutch-brake steering in place of the D11N's mechanical steering clutches and brakes; the D11T added ACERT emissions technology, a redesigned cab, and broader electronic control of the power train; the current D11 adds the C32B engine's reverse-power boost for faster reversing between dozing and ripping passes along with further automated blade and ripper functions. Because large numbers of D11N, D11R, and D11T units remain active in mine and quarry fleets worldwide, the used-equipment and parts market around this family stays large and active: engines, torque converters, transmissions, final drives, and undercarriage groups are rebuilt and resold across all three older generations, and a running used D11 still commands strong resale value given the cost and lead time of a new one.

  • Inspect engine mounts, radiator mounts, and tractor frame structure for cracking given the duty cycle.
Every 6,000 h
  • Change engine coolant (extended-life coolant) and flush the cooling system.
  • Evaluate torque converter and powershift transmission clutch packs for rebuild based on oil-analysis and pressure-test trends.
  • Regauge the undercarriage (track links, bushings, rollers, idlers, elevated-sprocket segments) and schedule rebuild or replacement of components at wear limits.
  • Inspect the engine top end (valves on applicable generations, injectors, turbocharger) for inframe-overhaul candidacy.
  • Rebuild or recondition blade lift/tilt/angle cylinders and Carrydozer push-arm bushings as wear dictates.

Servicing the 11 beyond the schedule

Predictive Maintenance & Fluid Analysis

Run scheduled oil sampling every 250 hours on engine oil (3508/3508B on D11N/D11R, C32/C32B ACERT on D11T and the current D11), and on power train and hydraulic oil, to catch bearing, clutch, and pump wear before failure. Sample coolant at each 1000-hour interval to track corrosion-inhibitor depletion in the cooling package. Because the D11's elevated-sprocket final drives and torque converter carry the machine's full mining and quarry duty cycle, trend oil-analysis reports over time rather than reacting to a single result.

Corrective & Common Repairs

Expect final-drive and elevated-sprocket wear, torque converter or steering clutch/brake faults (electronic clutch-brake steering from the D11R onward), and track pad, link, and bushing wear as the recurring failure points on a machine this size. Blade cutting edges, end bits, and Carrydozer push-arm bushings take heavy abrasive wear in mining and quarry service and need frequent turning or replacement. Radiator cores clog fast in dusty pits, driving airflow loss and overheating if not cleaned on schedule.

Overhaul & Rebuild Points

Power train rebuild is the big-ticket D11 job: torque converter, powershift transmission, bevel gear, and final drives typically reach clutch and bearing rebuild territory well before the undercarriage does, given the tractor's mining and quarry duty cycles. Track groups (elevated-sprocket final drives, rollers, idlers, links) get regauged and rebuilt or replaced once wear limits are reached rather than run to failure. Engine inframe or top-end overhaul (3508/3508B or C32/C32B ACERT) follows oil-analysis trend data and hour-based inspection, not a fixed calendar interval alone.

Seasonal & Environment Servicing

D11s run everywhere from arctic pit sites to desert quarries, so cold-weather starting aids (ether injection or engine block heaters), correct coolant freeze-point concentration, and cold-weather-grade fuel with a fuel-heater/water-separator check matter before winter shift changes. In hot, dusty operations, clean radiator and hydraulic-oil-cooler cores and air-intake precleaners more often than the standard interval to prevent derating and overheating. Inspect undercarriage seals and elevated-sprocket final-drive seals for grit ingress after sustained sandy or muddy operation.

11 fault codes & troubleshooting

CodeMeaningLikely causeWhat to do
CID 0100 - FMI 01Engine Oil Pressure - data valid but below normal operating range (low oil pressure).Low engine oil level, worn oil pump, plugged suction screen, or a genuine loss of lubrication pressure rather than a sensor fault.Stop the engine, check oil level, and verify pressure with a mechanical test gauge before restarting; do not swap the sensor first.
CID 0100 - FMI 03Engine Oil Pressure Sensor circuit - voltage above normal, open circuit or short to a higher-voltage source.Damaged or corroded sensor connector, chafed harness wiring, or a failed sensor.Inspect and clean the sensor connector, check harness continuity back to the ECM, replace the sensor only if wiring checks good.
CID 0110 - FMI 00Engine Coolant Temperature - data valid but above normal operating range (engine overheating).Low coolant level, plugged radiator core or fins, failed thermostat, or slipping/damaged fan drive.Shut down and allow the engine to cool, check coolant level and radiator cleanliness, then inspect fan drive and thermostat before returning to service.
CID 0110 - FMI 03Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor circuit - voltage above normal, open circuit or short to battery.Corroded sensor connector, open harness wire, or a failed sensor.Check sensor wiring and connector condition, test sensor resistance against specification, replace the sensor if the circuit tests good.
CID 0111 - FMI 01Engine Coolant Level Sensor - data valid but below normal range (low coolant level).Coolant loss from an external leak, head gasket, or oil cooler; or a low-coolant probe tip fouled with scale.Check coolant level at the sight glass, inspect for external leaks, and clean or replace the probe if level is confirmed correct but the fault persists.
CID 0261 - FMI 11Engine Timing Offset - ACERT fuel timing fault, root cause not otherwise classified.Timing calibration mismatch between the ECM and fuel system components, or a hydraulic/mechanical fuel system fault affecting injection timing.Connect Cat ET, run the injector/timing calibration check, and confirm fuel system component codes match the installed hardware.
CID 0444 - FMI 05Engine Start Relay circuit - current below normal or open circuit.Blown fuse, open relay coil, or broken/disconnected wiring to the start relay.Check the start circuit fuse and relay, test coil continuity, and repair any open wiring.
CID 0446 - FMI 06Air/Ether Shutoff Relay circuit - current above normal or short to ground.Shorted relay coil or chafed harness wiring grounding the circuit.Inspect the harness for chafe points, test relay coil resistance, and replace the relay or repair wiring as needed.

11 attachments & work tools

Blades - D11N (1986-1996)

D11N offered two dozer blades: the 11SU semi-universal at 25.1 m3 (32.8 yd3) capacity, 5.65 m (18 ft 6 in) wide over corner bits, and the 11U universal at 32.3 m3 (42.2 yd3), 6.41 m (21 ft) wide. Tilt was single-acting unless the dual-tilt option was ordered for the 11U blade. Cutting edges and end bits used DH-2 alloy steel for wear life in abrasive ground.

Blades - D11R/D11R CD (1996-2008)

D11R capacities grew to 27.2 m3 (35.5 yd3) on the 11SU and 34.4 m3 (45.0 yd3) on the 11U, each offered in a heavier abrasion-resistant (ABR, wear-plated) trim and a lighter non-ABR trim with a push plate in place of wear plates. Dual-tilt became standard across the line, a change from the D11N's optional dual-tilt. The D11R CD Carrydozer used a dedicated 11 Carrydozer blade at 43.6 m3 (57.0 yd3), 6.71 m (22 ft) wide, whose inside curvature carries material instead of only pushing it, mounted on a reinforced Carrydozer mainframe.

Blades - D11T/D11T CD (2008-early 2020s)

D11T kept the 27.2 m3 (35.6 yd3) 11SU ABR and 34.4 m3 (45.0 yd3) 11U ABR blades, each also offered as an abrasion-resistant or no-wear-plate factory variant. D11T CD used the 11CD Carrydozer blade at 43.6 m3 (57.0 yd3), 6.71 m (22 ft) wide over end bits. Specialty reclamation and coal blades of higher capacity for light material were also available through Cat Work Tools on this generation. All blades kept dual-tilt and tag-link mounting for close-coupled balance and penetration.

Blades - D11 (07B build, current)

Current no-suffix D11 keeps Semi-Universal (27.2 m3/35.6 yd3), Universal (34.4 m3/45.0 yd3), and Carrydozer (43.6 m3/57 yd3) as optional blades, and adds larger light-material blades: Reclamation Universal in 42 m3 (55 yd3) and 53.5 m3 (70 yd3) sizes, and Coal Universal in 65 m3 (85.5 yd3) and 75 m3 (98.0 yd3) sizes, the largest capacities offered in the D11 line. An extended blade pitch option and an electronically enabled quick-drop function are new on this generation; dual-tilt remains standard.

Rippers - D11N (1986-1996)

D11N single-shank ripper delivered 267 kN (59,900 lb) vertical penetration force and up to 1.61 m (5 ft 3 in) penetration with the standard tip; a deep-ripping arrangement on the same shank reached 2.18 m (7 ft 2 in) but required the pin puller. The multi-shank arrangement ran variable shank counts at a lower 256 kN (57,870 lb) penetration force. Pryout force ran roughly 602-611 kN (135,000-137,000 lb) depending on configuration, and each added multi-shank tooth added about 660 kg (1,454 lb).

Rippers - D11R/D11R CD (1996-2008)

D11R single-shank penetration force rose to 288 kN (64,800 lb) standard and 292 kN (65,644 lb) in deep-ripping trim, the deep shank reaching 2.17 m (7 ft 2 in) depth. The multi-shank arrangement gave 277 kN (62,325 lb) penetration force with a variable shank count, adding about 671 kg (1,489 lb) per extra shank. D11R CD's heavier ripper frame pushed single-shank penetration force to 326 kN (73,350 lb) and multi-shank to 306 kN (68,850 lb), matched to the Carrydozer's added mainframe mass and balance needs.

Rippers - D11T/D11T CD (2008-early 2020s)

D11T single-shank penetration force reached 350 kN (78,683 lb), with a deep-ripping arrangement at 382 kN (85,877 lb) reaching 2.17 m (85.5 in) maximum penetration; the multi-shank arrangement delivered 335 kN (75,311 lb), adding roughly 689 kg (1,519 lb) per extra shank. D11T CD's single-shank penetration force was 381 kN (85,652 lb) and multi-shank 365 kN (82,055 lb). CapSure hammerless tip and shank-protector retention replaced hammer-driven pins on this generation, tightened with a quarter-turn of a 3/4 in ratchet, and the factory rear-attachment list expanded to include a heavy-duty single-shank, a leach-pad multi-shank, and a coal multi-shank ripper alongside the standard configurations.

Rippers - D11 (07B build, current)

Current D11 keeps single-shank (standard, pushblock, and heavy variants), multi-shank three-shank (standard and heavy), multi-shank leach-pad, and multi-shank coal ripper options as factory rear attachments, all available with a pin puller. Ripper lift and pitch are electronically controlled through the new load-sensing hydraulic system rather than the fixed-relief gear-pump circuit used on D11T and earlier. Optional Auto Ripper Control uses a ROPS-mounted GNSS receiver to trim engine speed and ripper depth automatically to hold track slip at target level.

Winches

No winch attachment is offered on the D11 family in any generation from D11N through the current D11. Factory rear-attachment listings for this size class cover blades, rippers, drawbars, and counterweights only; a winch option has never appeared in the standard or optional equipment tables for this model.

Drawbars/Counterweights

A plain rear counterweight has been available on every D11 generation for tractor balance when no ripper or drawbar is fitted, and is recommended whenever the rear hitch is otherwise empty. D11R CD needed a far heavier counterweight package, roughly 13.4 t (29,620 lb) base plus an additional-weight option, to offset the Carrydozer blade's added front mass, versus about 5 t (11,000 lb) on the standard D11R. Starting with D11T/D11T CD, Cat also lists a standalone rear drawbar (not available on the Carrydozer variant) and, on the current D11, a combined drawbar-with-counterweight option.

Cab/ROPS/FOPS

A ROPS/FOPS cab has been standard across the family since the D11N, meeting SAE J1040/ISO 3471 rollover criteria and falling-object protection (SAE J231 on D11N, ISO 3449 Level II from D11R onward), built as a sound-suppressed, isolation-mounted structure. D11T/D11T CD added an optional sound-suppression package (sealed bottom guards, sound-reducing idler/sprocket segments, solid engine enclosure) cutting spectator sound by up to roughly 6 dB(A) and operator sound by up to roughly 4 dB(A), plus a powered access ladder with interlocks against raising with the blade up or releasing the parking brake with the ladder down. The current D11 carries ROPS/FOPS forward with a high-definition touchscreen display, a choice of single- or dual-pane (or high-pressure 40 psi/275 kPa) cab glass, and an optional four-camera 360-degree visibility package.

Hydraulic arrangement - blade/ripper circuits

D11N through D11T/D11T CD used a gear-type pump with fixed relief-valve settings; bulldozer/tilt circuits ran roughly 22,750-24,825 kPa (3,300-3,600 psi) depending on generation and Carrydozer versus standard blade, with a base two-valve system covering blade lift/tilt and a separate two-valve add-on needed for ripper lift/pitch with hydraulic shank-pitch adjustment. Electro-hydraulic pilot valves assisted both ripper and tilt control on these generations. The current D11 replaces this with an electronically controlled, load-sensing hydraulic system using variable piston pumps for both dozer lift/tilt and ripper lift/pitch as standard, paired with a stator-clutch torque divider for a combined fuel-efficiency gain over the older fixed-displacement gear-pump arrangement.

11 serial number reference

On the D11 the PIN/serial plate is riveted to the main frame rail on the right-hand side, ahead of the cab area and near the front idler/equalizer section of the chassis; a duplicate identification stamp is often present on the frame itself in case the plate is lost. Read the first three characters as the machine prefix and the digits that follow as the build sequence number within that prefix run; on the full 17-character PIN used since the early 2000s, the same 3-letter-prefix-plus-sequence pattern appears as the last 8 characters. Always match the prefix (not just the base model name) to the correct service manual or parts book, since a prefix break can mark a real running change in engine, hydraulics, or electrical systems within the same D11 generation.

Frequently asked questions

What engine powers the Caterpillar D11 across its generations?

It depends on generation. The D11N (1986-1996) used a Cat 3508 V8 diesel rated 770 hp. The D11R and D11R CD (1996-2008) moved to a Cat 3508B V8 with electronic unit injection, rated 850 hp net. The D11T and D11T CD (2008-early 2020s) used a Cat C32 ACERT V12, also 850 hp net. The current no-suffix D11 (07B build, 2021-present) uses a Cat C32B V12 rated 850 hp forward and roughly 955-957 hp in reverse.

What is the operating weight range of the D11?

Operating weight runs from roughly 104,000 kg (229,000 lb) on the original D11N up to about 106,600 kg (235,000 lb) on the current D11, with the exact figure depending on generation, blade, and ripper configuration. Carrydozer (CD) variants, built without a blade but with a heavier push-pull hitch and counterweight, sit toward the upper end of that range.

What replaced the D10, and is there a D11 successor?

The D11N replaced the Cat D10 as Caterpillar's largest track-type tractor when it launched in 1986. The line has continued through the D11R, the D11T, and the current no-suffix D11 (07B build) without ever being renumbered again. As of today the D11 remains Caterpillar's top-of-line standard production crawler dozer, with no D12 or other successor model announced.

What 11 owners discuss

How do the engines differ across D11 generations, and what quirks come with each?
Four distinct engines have powered this family and they are not treated as interchangeable. The D11N ran the 3508 V8 in both mechanically governed and later electronically governed form; the mechanical governor is the one that gives shops the most grief, with linkage wear and lubrication starvation showing up as a hunting idle or a flat power curve, and a failed injector on either version is usually the early warning sign that a full cylinder-pack rebuild is coming. The D11R and D11R CD moved to the 3508B, a stouter version of the same block that cleared up most of those governor complaints. The D11T and D11T CD switched to the C32 ACERT V12, which has overhead cams; the balancers on the cam gears produce a distinct ringing or rattle at idle that owners consider normal for the design, though a sudden change in that noise is worth a listen from a technician. The current no-suffix D11 (electric-drive, C32B V12) runs at a lower high-idle speed than the C32 ACERT and is built for a noticeably longer interval between rebuilds, with less fuel burned per tonne of material moved than the outgoing D11T.
What's a normal fuel burn for a D11, and when does high consumption point to a real problem?
Operators running D11R/D11T-class machines on typical dozing work report roughly 90 to 110 L/h (24 to 29 US gal/h), climbing to around 140 L/h (37 US gal/h) on a full-stall push. A machine burning well above that on ordinary work, especially if it blows black smoke as it winds up, usually points to a restricted air filter, an over-fueled setup left over from a prior tune, or being run in a taller gear than the load calls for. Check the smoke and filter condition first before assuming it's an engine problem.
How does the D11 steer, and what typically fails in that system?
The D11N and D11R generations steer the traditional way, with clutches and brakes at each final drive. Owners have traced steering complaints back to a worn clutch release bearing or a leaking piston seal, which shows up as a track that won't fully disengage or a pedal or lever that feels soft and doesn't respond crisply. The D11T and D11T CD changed the power train to a torque-divider arrangement that splits engine torque between a torque converter and a direct-drive shaft rather than running through a single conventional converter, so it won't behave like a machine with a straight torque-converter powershift when diagnosing a power or speed complaint. Steering or power-train faults on a machine this size are safety-critical. Have your dealer verify before it goes back to work.
What undercarriage wear pattern should I expect, and how much can maintenance stretch it?
Undercarriage on a machine this size carries roughly half the lifetime owning-and-operating cost, so wear gets watched closely. Component replacement windows run roughly 2,000 to 4,000 hours depending on ground conditions, and correct track tension, checked at the midpoint between idler and sprocket, prevents the large majority of premature wear. Disciplined daily cleaning and regular tension checks can roughly double undercarriage life compared to a neglected machine. Hard-rock and quarry operations often spec reinforced, thicker-pad shoes with wider, taller grousers to resist bending and breakage rather than running the standard shoe.
A blade or lift cylinder is drifting down or losing pressure. What's going on?
A cylinder that drifts down with the engine off, or loses response under load, is usually a seal or valve problem rather than a pump problem. Drift with the engine stopped often traces to oil backfeeding through a pilot control valve rather than the cylinder itself. Drift or slow, jerky motion with the engine running points more toward worn piston seals or rod damage letting oil bypass internally, frequently started by a nick or scratch on the rod that let contamination into the bore. Cylinder rods should show a mirror-smooth finish; any pitting, scoring, or weeping at the seal calls for inspection before the cylinder is trusted under a loaded blade.
What electrical or sensor problems tend to show up on machines this size?
Connector corrosion and vibration-loosened harness connections are the most common root cause behind electrical complaints on large Cat dozers, more often than the sensor or component itself. Reported symptoms include intermittent loss of power to gauges or accessories, joystick controls that stop responding and get swapped more than once before the harness is finally blamed, and steering or transmission solenoid faults that turn out to be a voltage problem in the wiring rather than the solenoid itself. Before replacing a sensor a second time, check the harness and connector pins for corrosion or a loose pin first.
What should I check before buying a used D11?
Start with the undercarriage since it drives the biggest share of ownership cost: check tension, look for uneven wear across the chain, and ask whether track or roller components have already been replaced. On the blade, look for plate lines along the cutting edge, a sign it has been refaced after excessive wear, which usually means other major repairs happened around the same time. Cylinder rods should be smooth with no leaks; a shop can put a gauge on the hydraulic system to check pressure at the control valves rather than judging by how the blade looks and feels. Run the engine under load and watch idle stability, smoke color, and how cleanly rpm recovers when the load comes off; a rough idle or heavy smoke under load is a red flag regardless of which engine generation is under the hood. Get full documentation on hours and any major component or engine replacements, and confirm which generation is actually in front of you (N, R, T, or the current electric-drive D11), since parts, engine, and power-train are not interchangeable across them. Given the money at stake, have your dealer verify hydraulic and power-train condition before committing to the purchase.
