Caterpillar 10SU

Maintenance schedule, common problems & OEM parts breakdown

"Caterpillar 10SU" is not a standalone tractor model. It is Caterpillar's parts and dealer catalog designation for the semi-universal (Semi-U) dozer blade fitted to the Cat D10 track-type tractor, the manufacturer's large-class crawler dozer and the machine that introduced Cat's elevated-sprocket "high drive" undercarriage in 1977. The base D10 tractor carrying a 10SU blade has been built across five generations. The original D10 (1977-1987) ran the mechanical 1786 cu in (29.3 L) V-12 Cat D348 diesel rated near 700 hp (522 kW) at 1800 rpm and weighed roughly 82-86 tonnes (180,000-190,000 lb). The D10N (1987-1996) moved to the Cat 3412 with electronic unit injection, in the 520-557 hp range depending on rating, at an operating weight commonly cited between 61 and 67 tonnes (134,000-147,000 lb) depending on configuration and source. The D10R (1996-2004) carried the fully ADEM-electronic 3412E at roughly 570 net hp (613 gross hp) and about 65 tonnes (144,190 lb). The D10T (2004 into the 2010s) and current D10T2 run the Cat C27 ACERT V-12, 580 net hp (433 kW) on the D10T and up to 600 net hp on the D10T2's Tier 4 Final-certified engine, with operating weight (SU blade, ripper, and standard shoes fitted) around 66-70 tonnes (146,500-154,700 lb). Cat has always offered the D10 with a choice of dozer blades: the 10U (Universal) for bulk material push over distance, the 10SU (Semi-U) for general dozing and ripping work, and a straight/angling blade on some early units, plus single- or multi-shank rippers, ROPS/FOPS cabs, and standard or extreme-service track shoes.

The core architecture has changed little since 1977: the same elevated-sprocket high-drive layout, planetary final drives mounted behind a transmission sharing a centerline with the steering clutches and brakes, and a 10SU blade geometry that has stayed close to about 4.94 m (194.5 in) wide, 2.12 m (83.5 in) tall, with roughly 18.5 m3 (24.2 yd3) capacity. What changed generation to generation is fuel delivery and controls: the original D10's mechanical D348 gave way to electronic unit injection on the D10N, then full ADEM-controlled electronics on the D10R's 3412E, then Cat C27 ACERT electronic controls and factory aftertreatment on the D10T2 to meet Tier 4 Final/Stage V. Steering also evolved from clutch-and-brake toward differential-steer refinements introduced with the D10R. In the used and parts market, that generational split matters more than the blade choice itself: mechanical D348 tractors are now bought mainly for parts recovery or rebuild projects, D10N/D10R machines remain working iron in mining and heavy earthmoving fleets with active demand for engine, undercarriage, and hydraulic components, and D10T/D10T2 machines, still in current production, hold the strongest resale value and factory parts support. Because "10SU" names a blade, not a serial-number family, any parts search for a 10SU-equipped D10 has to start with the tractor's generation — the blade interchanges across generations more readily than the engine, transmission, or undercarriage does.

Caterpillar 10SU specifications

Model Identification

What 10SU actually is10SU is Caterpillar's part-family code for the semi-universal (SU) dozer blade sized for the D10 track-type tractor. It is not a standalone tractor model. The number prefix matches the host tractor size class (10 = D10 family) and the suffix denotes blade type (S = straight, SU = semi-universal, U = universal). An abrasion-resistant version is offered as 10SU ABR.
Host tractor familyD10 track-type tractor line: original D10 (1977-1981), D10N, D10R (1996-2004), D10T (2004-2017), D10T2 (2017-2019), and current D10 (2019-present). The 10SU blade has been offered across the D10R/D10T/D10T2/current-D10 generations; engine and weight specs below are broken out by generation because they differ materially.
Engine change noteEngine differs by series: D10R uses the Cat 3412E; D10T, D10T2, and the current D10 use the Cat C27 ACERT. Any spec sheet for a 10SU-equipped machine must be read against the correct tractor series.

Engine

D10R (1996-2004) engineCat 3412E, V12, turbocharged and aftercooled, displacement 27.0 L (1,649 cu in). Net power 425 kW (570 hp), gross power 457 kW (613 hp) at 1,900 rpm.
D10T (2004-2017) engineCat C27 ACERT, V12, turbocharged, displacement 27.0 L (1,647.5 cu in). Net power 433 kW (580 hp), gross power 482 kW (646 hp).
D10T2 (2017-2019) engineCat C27 ACERT, V12, same 27.0 L displacement family as D10T; forward/reverse power split introduced (higher gross power available in reverse for reverse-loading/ripping passes). Exact forward/reverse hp figures vary by source and should be confirmed against the specific Specalog for the serial range.
Current D10 (2019-present) engineCat C27 ACERT, V12, displacement 27.0 L (1,648 cu in), bore/stroke 137/152 mm (5.4/6.0 in). Net power forward 449 kW (602 hp) per SAE J1349/ISO 9249. Gross power forward 471 kW (631 hp), gross power reverse 597 kW (801 hp) per SAE J1995 - the reverse rating boost supports reverse ripping and blade-carry work. Emissions: U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final / EU Stage V (Tier 2 equivalent also offered for non-regulated regions).
Original D10 (1977-1981) engine, use cautionSome secondary sources cite a Cat D348-family V12/V8 diesel rated around 700 flywheel hp for the first-generation D10; figures for this earliest series are inconsistent across sources and should be verified against an original Cat Specalog before use - do not blend with D10R/T/T2/current figures.

Weights (by series, SU-blade configuration)

Ground pressure, other seriesGround pressure for D10T/D10T2/current D10 on standard 610 mm shoes runs in a similar band to D10R (roughly 130-140 kPa / 19-20 psi); exact published figure varies by source and by shoe width fitted - treat the D10R figure as representative and verify per series/shoe combination with the dealer Specalog.
Drawbar pullMaximum drawbar pull at stall is on the order of 1,000 kN (approximately 225,000 lbf) for the D10-series tractor; actual peak varies by series, gear, and configuration. Treat as an order-of-magnitude figure rather than a fixed constant.
GradeabilityNot consistently published across available sources for the D10-series with 10SU blade. Not documented for this exact configuration - verify with a Cat dealer or the current Specalog.

Configuration note"10SU" (also shown as "10S" in period factory literature) identifies the Semi-Universal dozer blade option on the original Caterpillar D10 track-type tractor, not a separate driveline. The base tractor, engine, transmission and hydraulic system are shared across the 10SU (Semi-U), 10U (Universal) and 10C blade variants, so the fluid chart below is the same regardless of which blade is fitted. This chart covers the original D10 (approx. 1977-1996 production, D348 V-12 engine). Later D10N, D10R, D10T and D10T2 generations use different engines (3412E and C27/C32 ACERT family) and different fluid capacities — do not apply these numbers to those newer models.
Engine crankcase (diesel engine, incl. filter)79 L (21 US gal)Cat DEO (Diesel Engine Oil), API CD/CE duty grade. SAE 15W-40 for normal/moderate ambient temperatures, SAE 10W-40 or 10W-30 for cold-start conditions below about 0°C (32°F).
Cooling system197 L (52 US gal)Cat heavy-duty coolant/antifreeze, conventional low-silicate ethylene-glycol type mixed with water per climate (Cat Extended Life Coolant became the factory-fill option toward the end of this model's production run).

Track roller frame (each side, incl. recoil spring bearing and pivot shaft compartment)108 L (28.6 US gal) per sideCat TDTO, SAE 10W/30/50 by climate. The pivot shaft is not a separate refill point — it is lubricated as part of this sealed roller-frame compartment.
Hydraulic system / tank (implement hydraulics, 4-valve configuration)Total system 250 L (66 US gal); reservoir/tank only about 178-180 L (47-47.5 US gal).Cat TDTO — this generation of large dozer shares one power-train fluid across transmission, final drives and implement hydraulics. Capacities are refill values from factory literature — always fill to the dipstick/sight gauge, not the number.

Caterpillar 10SU maintenance schedule

Service intervalTasks
Every 10 h
  • Check engine oil level with dipstick before cold start; top off with the correct viscosity grade for ambient temperature.
  • Drain water and sediment from the fuel tank and primary fuel/water separator.
  • Check engine coolant level at the sight gauge and top off with the specified antifreeze/ELC blend.
  • Walk the undercarriage and visually check track tension, sprocket segments, and idler seals for leaks or damage.
  • On the 50-hour weekly interval, grease the blade tilt-cylinder pins, push-arm trunnion bushings, and pivot-shaft points.
  • Inspect the SU blade cutting edge and end bits for chipping or excess wear on the 50-hour check.
Every 250 h
  • Pull an S.O.S engine oil sample before draining, taken warm with the engine running.
  • Replace the fuel filter and hydraulic/transmission return filter.
  • Service batteries and check charging-system connections.
  • Test coolant condition and additive concentration.
  • Measure track tension by stringing the grousers from sprocket to idler and averaging the sag; adjust the grease valve as needed.
  • Complete a detailed undercarriage inspection of equalizer bar end pins, roller frame seals, and track shoes.
Every 500 h
  • Change engine oil and filter on standard-sump D10N/D10R engines; pull the S.O.S sample first.
  • Sample hydraulic and transmission/torque-converter oil.
  • Drain and refill each planetary final-drive housing with the machine positioned so the level plug sits horizontal; inspect magnetic drain plugs for metal.
  • Check pivot-shaft oil level on both sides of the undercarriage and top off.
  • Measure undercarriage wear (sprocket, chain, roller, idler) and log against baseline to plan turn timing.
Every 1,000 h
  • Replace the steering/hydraulic charge filter.
  • Pull S.O.S samples from engine, hydraulic system, transmission, and both final drives.
  • Remove and clean the fuel tank strainer; replace the fuel cap filter.
  • Inspect the serpentine/accessory drive belt and replace if cracked or glazed.
  • Check ROPS/FOPS mounting bolts for correct torque and structural damage.
  • Change engine oil on deep-sump D10T/D10T2 C27 engines, which extend the standard interval via the larger factory oil pan.
Every 2,000 h
  • Drain and refill engine oil, transmission, bevel gear case, and final-drive powertrain oils together.
  • Replace the hydraulic tank filter and take a fresh hydraulic oil sample.
  • Replace primary and secondary fuel filters; drain sediment from the fuel tank sump.
  • Replace the cabin fresh-air filter and inspect/replace the recirculating cabin filter.
  • Inspect and replace the serpentine belt and crankcase breather as needed.
  • Check steering clutch/brake or differential-steer adjustment, per generation, for wear.
Every 6,000 h
  • Check and adjust valve lash; on mechanical D348 tractors this is a feeler-gauge timing job, on ADEM/ACERT-controlled 3412E and C27 engines it follows the same interval with electronically assisted timing checks.
  • Replace extended-life coolant (ELC) and thermostats.
  • Inspect turbocharger compressor and turbine shaft play.
  • Inspect steering clutch and brake discs for wear and reline or replace as needed.
  • Service the track adjuster/recoil-spring assembly and check for grease or oil seepage.
Every 12,000 h
  • Plan an undercarriage turn: sprockets, track chains, rollers, and idlers typically reach wear limits in this range, sooner in abrasive or rock-ripping duty.
  • Inspect and rebuild final-drive planetary gear sets and bearings.
  • Evaluate the engine for a top-end or inframe overhaul; mechanical D348 units historically needed this sooner under sustained full-load dozing, while electronic 3412E/C27 engines run longer when S.O.S sampling and coolant care are current.
  • Reseal and inspect blade tilt and lift cylinders, rods, and push-arm bushings.
  • Recondition or replace the SU blade cutting edge, end bits, and moldboard wear points.

Servicing the 10SU beyond the schedule

Predictive Maintenance & Fluid Analysis

Run S.O.S oil analysis on the C27 ACERT, 3412E, or 3412 V-12 at every scheduled sample point; trace metal counts flag planetary final-drive or torque-converter wear long before it shows up at the cutting edge. Track coolant condition closely — the V-12 runs hot under sustained full-blade dozing loads, and a neglected ELC charge accelerates liner cavitation. Log undercarriage wear-plate measurements at each 500-hour check to plan sprocket, chain, and roller turns before the 10SU blade loses push efficiency to a worn drivetrain.

Corrective & Common Repairs

Common failure points on 10SU-equipped D10s center on the blade linkage and high-drive undercarriage: tilt-cylinder rod seals, push-arm trunnion bushings, and the SU blade's cutting edge and end bits wear fastest under combined ripping-and-dozing cycles. On mechanical D348 and early EUI 3412 engines, injector and turbocharger faults drive most shop visits; on ADEM/ACERT-controlled D10R-D10T2 units, expect more electrical and sensor-driven diagnostic work. Steering clutch and brake wear is a recurring repair on early clutch-brake-steer tractors as final-drive hours accumulate.

Overhaul & Rebuild Points

The elevated-sprocket final drives isolate drivetrain shock from track shock, but the planetary gear sets and bearings inside still need an inframe or full rebuild as hours stack up — undercarriage turns typically fall in the 12,000-15,000-hour range, sooner in abrasive or rock-ripping duty. Mechanical D348 engines historically needed inframe overhauls sooner under sustained full-load dozing; electronic 3412E and C27 engines run longer between overhauls when S.O.S sampling and coolant care stay current. Rebuild blade tilt and lift cylinders and push-arm bushings alongside any major undercarriage turn.

Seasonal & Environment Servicing

Cold-climate D10 operation needs the correct engine oil viscosity grade checked before winter, plus ether-assist starting aid service on pre-electronic D348/3412 tractors; ADEM/ACERT-controlled D10R-D10T2 engines add block-heater and cold-mode logic to the checklist. In hot, dusty ripping or mining duty, shorten air filter and radiator core cleaning intervals and inspect the SU blade's abrasion-resistant cutting edge more often — abrasive ground wears the 10SU's semi-U profile faster than the wider 10U blade. Match track shoe width and grouser style to ground conditions to control undercarriage wear rate.

10SU attachments & work tools

Blades

"10SU" denotes the semi-universal (SU) blade size/type coding Caterpillar applies to its D10-class large dozer, not a separate tractor model. Standard SU ABR (abrasion-resistant) blade runs 18.5-19.4 m³ (24.2-25.4 yd³) capacity per SAE J1265, about 4,940 mm (194.5 in) wide over end bits and 2,120 mm (83.5 in) tall, with digging depth from roughly 510 mm racked back to 760 mm pitched forward. Some dealer literature also lists straight (S) and universal (U) blade references for this class alongside SU, and separately an angle-blade mention turns up, but the SU ABR is the blade documented on the current factory spec sheet as the production configuration; treat S/U/angle listings as varying by source/series rather than confirmed factory options. Dual tilt is standard, with an Automated Blade Assist option to hold pitch angle automatically; VPAT (variable pitch angle tilt) is not documented for this size class, it appears on Caterpillar's mid-size D6-D8 dozers instead.

Rippers

Two ripper arrangements are offered for this dozer class: a single-shank ripper with pin-puller (the configuration used in the factory operating-weight baseline), and a multi-shank ripper frame that can be run with one, two, or three shanks. Each additional shank beyond the first adds about 544 kg (1,199 lb) to machine weight, so a fully loaded three-shank setup adds roughly 1,090 kg (2,400 lb) over the single-shank baseline. An automatic ripper control option is available that modulates ripper depth to limit track slip and cut operator workload.

Winches

This dozer class is one of the few in its weight range built with a torque-converter-driven PTO output, which is what allows fitment of large PTO winches; Allied's W12E is the PTO-driven towing winch matched to it, rated around 120,000 lb (about 54,400 kg) line pull and marketed as the largest PTO towing winch generally available. A hydraulic-drive equivalent, the Allied H12E, offers a comparable line-pull rating with finer inching control for recovery work. Both winch units integrate a built-in rigid drawbar.

Drawbars/counterweights

A rear counterweight is listed as a specialty attachment alongside the ripper options, used to balance the machine when running heavier rear-mounted tools. Where a towing winch is fitted (W12E/H12E), the winch housing itself incorporates a rigid built-in drawbar rather than a separate bolt-on drawbar attachment.

Cab/ROPS guarding options

Standard cab is a ROPS/FOPS structure meeting ISO 3471 (rollover) and ISO 3449 Level II (falling object) protection. Caterpillar does not document a dedicated forestry or waste-handling (WH) guarding package for this large dozer class the way it does for mid-size dozers like the D7E WH or D9T WH; those WH-specific packages (radiator grille guards, perforated engine doors, rear striker bars, fuel tank guarding) are built for smaller machines. Undercarriage arrangement choices for this class include abrasion-resistant, cold-weather, guarded, and sound-suppressed options, but these address ground-engaging and climate protection rather than forestry brush guarding.

Hydraulic arrangement

The dozer uses a load-sensing implement hydraulic system, with implement pump output rated near 7,000 kPa (1,015 psi) at roughly 2,010 engine rpm; electro-hydraulic pilot valves control both blade and ripper functions from the cab. Cylinder strokes are about 1,653 mm (65.1 in) for blade lift, 241 mm (9.5 in) for blade tilt, 535 mm (21.1 in) for ripper shank lift, and 660 mm (26.0 in) for ripper shank angle, giving independent front (blade) and rear (ripper) circuits sized for simultaneous dozing and ripping.

Frequently asked questions

What engine does the Caterpillar 10SU (D10) run?

"10SU" is the Semi-U blade code, not a separate engine platform — the engine depends on which D10 generation carries that blade. The original D10 (1977-1987) used the mechanical V-12 Cat D348, about 700 hp (522 kW) at 1800 rpm. The D10N (1987-1996) used the electronically-injected Cat 3412 EUI V-12. The D10R (1996-2004) used the fully electronic Cat 3412E, roughly 570 net hp. The D10T and current D10T2 run the Cat C27 ACERT V-12, 580 net hp on the D10T and up to 600 net hp on the Tier 4 Final D10T2.

What is the operating weight of a Caterpillar 10SU (D10) dozer?

It varies by generation and configuration. The original mechanical D10 weighed roughly 82-86 tonnes (180,000-190,000 lb). The D10N is commonly cited between 61 and 67 tonnes (134,000-147,000 lb) depending on source and build. The D10R runs about 65 tonnes (144,190 lb), and the D10T/D10T2 with a 10SU blade, ripper, and standard shoes fitted run about 66-70 tonnes (146,500-154,700 lb). Always confirm against the specific serial number's spec sheet since rippers, dual tilt, and shoe width all shift the figure.

What replaced the Caterpillar 10SU (D10) dozer?

Nothing replaced the 10SU specifically — it's a blade option, not a model line, and it remains available on the current D10 platform. The D10 tractor itself evolved rather than being discontinued: the original D10 (1977-1987) was followed by the D10N (1987-1996), then the D10R (1996-2004), then the D10T, and today's Tier 4 Final D10T2. Each generation carries forward the same elevated-sprocket high-drive undercarriage and offers the 10SU blade alongside the wider 10U option.

What 10SU owners discuss

What causes a D10 to lose movement with no active fault codes, and where do owners start troubleshooting?
Owners report the machine going into neutral or refusing to move with nothing showing on the display. Start with transmission oil level and condition first — low or contaminated fluid causes lockup in the powershift transmission before anything electronic is suspect. Next check the transmission/torque converter output speed sensors and their wiring at the bulkhead connector for corrosion or chafing. A bad or uncalibrated speed sensor is a repeat culprit, especially right after a sensor swap — skipping the required recalibration on the diagnostic tool shows up as drive loss (commonly in reverse) after 15 to 20 minutes of running rather than immediately. Also check the hydraulic control valve and linkage feeding the transmission clutch packs before condemning the torque converter or transmission itself.
What undercarriage wear pattern is typical on a D10, and how do techs actually measure it?
Undercarriage is the single biggest wear-cost item on a D10 regardless of which blade is fitted, since blade choice doesn't change track loading. Techs measure bushing diameter, pin-to-pin pitch (chain stretch), roller and idler diameter, and rail height, then compare each to factory new-part specs to get a percentage-worn figure per component, not one blended number. A single quoted "undercarriage is X% worn" figure is a red flag on its own — chain can be heavily worn while rollers and sprockets are still near new, or the reverse, depending on ground conditions and how the machine was run. Later D10 series offer an extended-life, sealed-and-lubricated undercarriage option that outlasts standard heavy-duty chain by a wide margin in abrasive dirt-moving work; worth confirming which type is fitted on any used machine since it changes expected remaining chain life significantly.
What's the known engine quirk on the original D10 (D348 V12), and does it still turn up on surviving machines?
The original D10 (1977 production run) uses the D348, a twin-turbocharged, direct-injection V-12. Early production units had an exhaust-routing design that caused running problems; Cat corrected this from around 1980 onward by moving to twin exhaust stacks at the front of the machine instead of the original layout. A surviving early machine still carrying its as-built exhaust routing is more likely to show the old symptom set — most D10s still working today have already been converted or rebuilt past that point. Mechanics who've wrenched on these describe them as durable but old-school and maintenance-hungry: expect frequent hands-on attention rather than a bulletproof, low-touch experience, even on a sound example.
What's different about the 3412E electronic engine in the D10N/D10R generation, and what actually fails first?
D10N/D10R run the electronically controlled Cat 3412E. Reported no-start and no-fire complaints most often trace back to the fuel shutoff solenoid not energizing, a blown fuse or relay in the fuel circuit, or a restricted fuel filter/supply line — check these before suspecting the injectors. When a fault does trace to the injection side, it's frequently a wiring or connector problem (oil-contaminated connector, chafed harness pin causing a short or overvoltage) rather than a genuinely failed injector. If a cylinder cutout test on the diagnostic tool flags an injector, pull the valve cover and physically inspect before ordering parts — a broken injector return spring is a known finding that a cutout test alone can't distinguish from a wiring fault.
What electrical/sensor gremlins show up on D10 cabs, and where should owners look first?
The most repeated owner complaint, across series, is intermittent loss of cab power — dash gauges, radio, the 12V accessory outlet, and the fuel level sender all drop out together, sometimes logged as a high-voltage fault, and sometimes paired with a steering solenoid that needs repeat replacement. Because the cab sits on rubber isolation mounts, the cab-to-mainframe ground strap is the first place to check — a poor or corroded ground here produces exactly this kind of vibration-triggered intermittent fault. Next check the main fuse in the cab fuse panel for a loose fit, and inspect harness connectors for corrosion; connectors on these machines are known to develop marginal contact that comes and goes with vibration, which makes it hard to catch on a static bench test. Any diagnosis that involves replacing a steering solenoid or reworking machine grounding should be confirmed by your dealer before the machine goes back to work — steering response is safety-critical.
Do D10T2 (C27 ACERT) machines throw useful fault codes, and what do owners actually see?
Yes — the C27 is a fully electronic engine with diagnostic trouble codes covering the electrical power supply, the CAN data link, and operator-station inputs, so most complaints resolve to a specific code rather than a guessing game. A commonly reported one is a high-exhaust-temperature fault; the engine control module either reads this directly from the exhaust gas temperature sensor or infers it from other engine parameters. Reported root causes, roughly in order of likelihood, are a failed or contaminated EGT sensor, a loading diesel particulate filter, or a turbocharger issue. Because this fault path ties into engine protection and emissions strategy, have the exact code pulled and confirmed on the dealer diagnostic tool rather than swapping the EGT sensor on suspicion alone.
What should a buyer specifically check on a used D10, blade configuration aside?
Engine: should idle steady, hold temperature under load, and respond smoothly to throttle without heavy dark smoke. Transmission and steering: shifts and turns should be smooth and repeatable — hunting, delayed engagement, or uneven turning response points to wear or an electronic fault, not just something needing adjustment. Hydraulics: blade and ripper cycle times should stay consistent across repeated cycles; a cycle that gradually slows under the same load points to pump wear or internal leakage. Undercarriage: ask for actual measurements (bushing diameter, pitch, roller/idler diameter, rail height) instead of a verbal wear percentage, since chain, rollers, and sprockets wear at different rates. Structure: check welds on push arms, blade mounts, and the trunnion/C-frame area for reinforcement that flags past heavy use or repair. History: ask how the hours were accumulated — production dozing, ripping, or mining duty cycle changes remaining driveline and undercarriage life more than the hour meter alone tells you. Load-test the machine pushing material before finalizing an offer, not just an idle walk-around. Have a dealer inspection confirm steering, brake, and structural findings before purchase — these are safety-relevant items a walk-around alone won't fully validate.
